Andy,
There are several solutions and 4k ukp is a 'gross' exageration.
Since my solution is 'commercial' I'll EMail you privately but for
others reading this list I would simply say that not all advice is good
advice ! Nuff said.

Then he's probably a cr*p LR repair man, or a bloddy greedy one !

Subject: G/Box noise identity ????

Hi fellow LRO's,

Okay, so who can analyse this noise for me.
Its eminating from the gearbox/transfer box area,
it only occurs once moving over 20/30 mph, it is
independant of the clutch being in or out, it also
occurs even when it is knocked out of gear, i.e
roliing downhill out of gear with the clutch out.
The noise: well, it kinda sounds like a small bell
being tinkled constantly, a sort of dingalinggalinggaling.
if you know what I mean(sorry if you don't, but this is
difficult to explain without looking like a real
bonehead).
The noise continues all the way up to cruising speed
and even when the overdrive is engagaed.
A bit od background info- the G/Box mileage is high and
it ha been reconditioned once before(there is a plate
riveted on the 'box.) The 'box is generally noisy-with
all the usual whines and clunks, and a hell of a lot
of backlash to take up after the overrun.
Do I just get rid of the damn thing in favour of a recon
box, or is there something I am missing.

Any help vastly appreciated, thanks,
Stu & EMMA- '76 SWB Ser III V8- loathe of my life.

Andy-
So far your diagram has helped me to find the vacuum retard line. It is
blocked off under the carb. I found no illustration or mention of it in the
manual or parts book, so I very heartily thank you. Your diagram showed a
'flame trap' in the vacuum retard line. I can't find it in the parts book.
Might you know the parts number? What do you think would be the advisability
of connecting the vacuum retard hose without the flame trap? Do you have a
parts book for that vehicle? If so, I'm looking at "2F 15", Group H. I have
"ERC 548" ('Adaptor For Carburetter') fitted to my carbs. Do you? My question
is: Where do the vacuum lines ('NRC60 & NRC61') go to? Right now I just have
the two elbow fittings ('NRC223' X 2) which are open to the atmosphere. The
details on these systems aren't even vague, at best.
Someone on the list here wrote that a 'Grey Market' RR has a lessor value. I
beg to differ. If they are truly so, please direct them (RR's, not the
person) towards me, as I think they have assets that aren't found on the
newer (with brain) versions. Cold starting being one that comes immediately
to mind. Also owner diagnosis/serviceability. And then there's economy....
And one more thing- I'm told that "Felpro" gaskets, as sold by JC Whitney for
the Buick 215 will work. My question is: Has anyone had any experience with
their head gaskets (Felpro)? I'm told they're thicker and will slightly lower
the compression ratio, which to my warped mind is desireable. (I'm the guy
looking for a 7:1 head for a P6).
see 'ya on the old road...

       '68 P6 TC
       '61 LR 88" SW
       '84 RR (HC)
LR...quite possibly one of the best machines yet devised!

It could be the hand brake drum. The nuts may be loose. It is the sort
of thing you don't find easily 'cos you normally apply the brake when
you get under the Landy to prod around. Of course with the brake on it
will not be loose.
So chock the vehicle so it can't move and let the brake off. The see if
the drum is loose. If so, tighten up the nuts. As a quickie, just lift
the centre seat box cover so that you can watch the brake drum as you
drive. This will let you know quickly.

It could be other things though.

Let us know how you get on.
