Yes, it's available in most large car stores i.e. Halfords, Road User
etc., also in factors such as Partco.

Thanks to all (especially Mike, Glen and Peter) for your help.

And in case anyone else wants to know, Craddocks, Stafford-Dovey and
Baines in Tunbridge Wells can all supply the rubber strip used to hold in
series one hard top windows. So there :-)

Subject: National Green Lane clearing day

As some of you may be aware, the AWDC is organising a National Green
Lane clearing day on Sunday, March 24.
I have received the following from the ROW rep for Surrey, it may be
     of interest to some.

"In Surrey we will be carrying out some work on or around the Drove
Road (North Downs Way, between Effingham & Gomshall) with the duel
aims of protecting and repairing the lane, and conservation of some of
the surrounding areas. If you wish to help, come along, all welcome.
We will be between GR 110497 & 100491 on OS map for Dorking &
Leatherhead (187 I think). There will be a BBQ at lunch time. (Bring
your own food) Starts at 09:00"

These events are a great family day out, a good PR opportunity, and a
chance to use all that off road clobber that still has not got muddy
     this year.

I too am looking for the same sort of thing again in the South of
England (Sussex) so if you get any good ideas...

I'll be there!

Now can somebody give me a lift...

Andy, are you and Dave going? Can I cadge a lift with you?

I am still LR less and probably will be on the 24th.

Any chance of a decent uk-lro turn out? I know there are lots of
you in the area, but I won't name names.

I know our road tax should pay for all the maintenance, but the fact is
the money is psent on other things and councils class unsurfaced road
repairs as a low priority.

Anybody who uses, or plans to use this type of roads should do their
bit, as it could be the only way in which continued access can be
guaranteed.

I hope to see loads of you there.

Regards, Steve

He would if he knew the answer !
Better still if he could remember the question !!!

I tend to not get involved if others are answering a question but if you
*need* me to give my tuppeny worth just EMail me, that way a response
doesn't rely on me having time to browse the list.

I *think* it was your friends' and he was suffering from a white
substance in the oil. This can only be water emulsifying and therefore
one *only* has to find the source. The most obvious is a head gasket for
which there is a simple chemical test. Otherwise it's probably
condensation from short journeys as David said. Havings said all that
the heading refers to 'Perkins' and since they were never original
equipment in a Land Rover I'm not sure if they are prone to this or not.
Certainly the Land Rover engine isn't.

Subject: Land Rover 2 wheel drive model ?

It's not often that I ask a question here but can any of the
knowledgeable enthusiasts out there give me some background on a Land
Rover 2 wheel drive. Front beam axle (hence no front diff) and no front
output housing on the transfer box, otherwise it's a fairly normal
Series 2 circa 1959.

My customer wants to make it 4 wheel drive which we know how to do but
I've advised him to hang fire till we assess it's value 'cos it must be
a bit of a rare beast.

Hi all ,

Land Rover World April '96 issue features an article on a fun day out
with the South Downs Land Rover Club.
Contact name appears to be Paul Garratt (01323) 844440

I believe they also have a monthly meeting in a pub !!

AFAIK these were made for the Armed Forces and maybe for the WD who wanted
to have a vehicle for street use, but still with the same logistics as their
other Land-Rovers.

I seem to remember having seen ads for them in LROI or LRW at pretty much
the same prices as the normal 4x4. Is it really worth converting, I wonder?
This would probably cost your customer the better part of the price of a 4x4
of the same age, wouldn't it? Not that it is any of my business...

Subject: Short diesel trips

Hi all,
There have been a few recent references to the unsuitability of diesels for
short trips. Would someone be kind enough to give me some background on that? I
already feel that driving a mile to work in a trans-Africa vehicle must be
lacking in PCness, but I didn't know that there were mechanical implications as
well.
I should add that apart from the local short stuff, el Galeon gets a good
workout on some terrible roads getting me to dive sites - it's certainly not
just a commuter.
Thanks
