Date: Sat, 16 Mar 1996 10:43:44 GMT From: "M.G.Forster" <cmtmgf@mail.soc.staffs.ac.uk> Subject: M.G. help - apology! I mistakenly sent a 'HELP' message to the list instead on majordome, sorry about that! Thanks to those who reminded of the correct procedure, shouldn't happen again. Anyway does anyone have an opinion about the best/economic place to get a new chassis for my ageing Series III LWB Safari. Its a 1973 2.25 petrol I have had for the past 8 years and I don't want to part with it. The present chassis should last another year, I hope, (MOT next week) so I will probably not start this rebuild project until the Autumn. Any comments very welcome. Would someone be kind enough to give me some background on that? Most engine wear occurs just after the engine has been started; before the oil is circulating properly and operating temp has been reached. I would think that this is common to all engines, not just diesels. I occaisionally need to charge the LR's battery during the winter, since cold starts and other power drains like the heater, lights, wipers & rear demister take more out of the battery than is being put in. I guess that this is more of a problem in Scotland than St. Lucia! ------------------------------------- Tom Stevenson gbfv08@udcf.gla.ac.uk University Marine Biological Station Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland Tel 01475 530581 Fax 01475 530601 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------[ <- Message 3 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960317 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I think the RAF specified some for use on airfields where 4 wheel drive would never be necessary. Do you know whether it is ex-military? I've never heard of any civilian 4X2 landrovers but you never know. There was a piece about them in "The Landrover Story" in LRO quite a long time ago, I can't remember when. This is probably not much help but may be enough to point your customer in the right direction. Looking at our taxis again, I would assume that diesel engines are a little less susceptible to the damage done by a high number of cold starts, mainly because they are overengineered in most cases. Whether your drive to the office is one mile or a hundred miles does not make any difference, BTW, since the damage done by starting the engine is not undone by driving 99 additional miles. Two cold starts a day will do a certain amount of damage, and that is that. You just have to make sure your ants don't go for additional joyrides. What would really make the difference, IMAO, is the way you drive the mile to your job. If you try to break any LR speed records, if you make the engine howl when you first start, if you are negligent about the lube volume and/or quality your engine will suffer. A bike, BTW, would keep you healtier and wealthier and wiser, ie let you spend more money on your Nikons, plus the ants would have a real hard time!
