Subject: Unleaded heads and overdrives
Please could people verify my reasoning here:
In pure financial terms, an unleaded head costs about 200 quid - which
allows you to use unleaded fuel rather than leaded fuel in your vehicle.
The price difference between unleaded and leaded is 5 pence.
This means that, to recover your 200 quid, you need to use (20000/5) 4000
litres of fuel
If there are 4.5 litres to a gallon, you need to use 889 gallons.
If you get 15mpg from a 2.25, that equates to 13,335 miles!
Question - what is the increase fuel efficiency with an overdrive?

Sounds Ok to me; I have been told that the unleaded head takes about a year
to pay for itself.
The overdrive is supposed to save you about 10% on fuel; when I had one I
tended to just drive faster since the noise was reduced.
Cheers!

Ian, et al
Some years ago I converted my 2Ltr engine to run on unleaded at a cost
of UKP125, by changing the exhaust valves to a hardened type from a 6
cylinder triumph engine (I think). After 12 months & 6000 miles one of
the valves burnt out whilst on holiday. We still managed to cover 600
miles on 3 cylinders. The burnt valve was replaced at a cost of UKP25
+ sundries.
The next thing to go was one of the other valves some 6 months later,
fortunately I had kept the original 40 year old valves, and decided to
cut my loses and go back to the old set-up rather than keep forking
out hard earn't dosh topping up the local LR dealers pension fund.
I have now done a further 15,000 miles on the original valves, and
still have at least 130lb. compression on each pot.
So you ask, what am I wibbling on about, buggered if I know.
Suffice to say, that my old LR passes her MOT each year with a
commendation from the tester, and a comment that she is less polluting
than most of the newer cars he gets in for testing.
If you really feel bad about it, fit O/D and pollute less/mile.
Save your mony, Drink lead, eat beef and be dammed.

Roughly, yes. But then complicate the equation with the fact that you have
to retard the timing thus reducing the performance therefore requiring more
throttle to maintain the same performance thus eroding any saving and
possibly increasing the fuel costs !
>Question - what is the increase fuel efficiency with an overdrive?

How are you going to use it? The gearing is increased by 28.8% but when
you consider that on some occasions you will probably be increasing the
load on the engine by labouring on hills or from the effect of the air flow
efffiency of a house brick syndrome you'll probably only get 15%
improvement in fuel economy. Still there are other imeasurable benefits not
the least is the effect on the ear drums.

Interesting, I have to agree that my poor old 2.25 petrol gets a yearly
commendation from the MOT tester on the lowest emmissions he ever sees! (that's
before he hands over the failure on everything else under the sun - including
the exhaust itself). Must be something to do with the Weber carb (don't start
that again) and my desire to run it just above the 'pinking level'. Don't you
set you mixture by finding a level stretch of road, flooring the pedal at 30mph
and setting the mixture until it just pinks. Oooops is my manual years out of
date, and what is a dwell meter anyway? I suspect the overdrive is good value,
providing you aren't hill climbing as my 2.25 leaded returns over 22mpg on a
long run with all economy cons (Weber,FWH,O/D) except unleaded head, which as
has been pointed out doesn't prevent me from using unleaded.
Hints
[1] wait 'til midnight before you start, with no traffic jams you might arrive
in time for breakfast!
[2] don't attempt to go over 50mph if it doesn't want to and see [1] above.
[3] Take one tank of leaded and one of unleaded and select based upon
circumstances!
[4]A manual advance retard fitted to the dash might be an idea, they should have
invented LR's 20 years earlier!
cheers,
Mark :-))))) They haven't banned British Beer yet!
