I did read an article in Cars & Car Conversions about tuning racing Alfa diesels for racing a while back. It was ages ago, but if I can find it I could post you a copy. Apart from that it's Sunday and I'm at work :-( But I do get paid for the overtime at weekends :-) The article said that anything that you can do to get more air in is good. Unlike petrol engines there is not a problem with mixtures running lean. For some reason I don't remember the injection system does not have a problem coping with extra air, whether it has some airflow sensor So what you want to do it junk the air filter. Fit a BIG K&N. Also fit a ram pipe (bellmouth) inside the filter. Do not bother with anything that isn't a K&N. Foam filters are useless, they flow and filter less than a K&N. If there are any sharp edges in the intake tract remove them. Polish the air end of the intake. The engine end can be a bit rougher to cause turbulence, which causes fuel/air mixing, a good thing to have. You should also remove the viscous fan and fit a BIG kenlowe. If you are racing properly you need lots of cooling and lots of reliability. An extra 20 quid on a bigger fan could save a meltdown. Diesels really hate to overheat. Setting the engine up properly can often cause a large increase in power, getting a professional to set the engine up with performance in mind, rather than economy or pollution control (spit) as the main aim. It might be nice to get through an MOT though. If you are going to win, you have to finish. Reliability is very important. Make sure anything which is a bit dicky is fixed. Racing puts a larger strain on everything. If there is a weak link in the LR anywhere, you fill find it just when you didn't want to. Remember messing with engines is done at your own risk and could severely damage your wallet, not to mention cause a meltdown. I needed cheering up yesterday so I went round to laugh. Er I mean help him get the box out. When I arrived he couldn't get the transfer box off the main box. The intermediate shaft was still in so the two nuts hidden behind it must have been as well. Good start. When removed the fun started. It's worth noting that the vehicle in question is a 26 year old IIa that he has owned for 18 months. S: Have you drained the box? A: No, I don't have anything to fit the drain plug. S: We can pull out the fill plug and tip it on it's side. A: That's seized, I've never had it off. S: Bet I can get it off. Damn, your poxy half inch spanner if just bending. Damn your other poxy half inch spanner has just snapped. Lucky the adjustable is stronger. (Hot tip hot water really helps). A: I thought the Haynes manual said there is 2.5 pints in a box. S: Well the half was in there! I think I know the problem. There was more oil around the handbrake than in the box. Following the dismantling procedure carefully we stripped the box. Stopping only to laugh hysterically when the lay shaft came out in 2 bits. I think he got off lightly considering the neglect of no oil changes for at least 18 months and only half a pint in it. The damage: Layshaft, both bearings at the ends of the layshaft. Input shaft bearing (quater inch of play in the shaft!!) and 2 teeth missing from third gear selector - and that has a synchro. Not to mention my aching ribs from laughing so much 8*) Nearly makes up for working on a Sunday. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.
