Subject: stereo whine suppression

Hi,

hope everyone had a good Easter. :^)

I've got a question which seems to be eliciting nothing but 'ummm' 'errr'
and 'I think it might be this way...' from people I ask about it, so maybe
there's someone out there who can provide a definitive answer.

I've recently fitted a stereo (non-genuine LR) to my 110 2.5 n/a diesel and
when turning on the engine, got that electrical interference whine from the
engine - i.e. as one accelerates, the whine goes higher in proportion to engine
speed. 'you need an alternator suppressor' says my cousin, so off we go and
get one.

can anybody tell me definitively, which of the three wires on the alternator
I need to wire it into to actually achieve the suppression effectively? The
most solid answer I've had so far (by this I mean the person who ummed the
least) was to connect it to the warning light wire. It's still whining

The alternator connections are (left to right if you're facing the windscreen)

        i I I
^ ^^^------- two thicker wires of the same colour, size etc.
        little warning light wire

I would have thought that I'd have to suppress one of the two thicker wires
rather than the warning light wire, but which one? the one closest to the
warning light wire, or the one furthest away?

Any other ideas, if people think it's a different problem altogether, would be
greatly appreciated so as to avoid splitting headaches on long journeys when
I'd like some music in my 110. :^)

thanks,

ParacetamolJas.

How about a .1 microfarad capacitor between the 12V power line(s) to the
radio and the earth return(s).

Stick them as close to the radio as possible, and do *all* the 12V lines.

Subject: Tyres

Greetings.

A couple of queries on tyres...

Can anyone explain the different systems for describing tyre sizes? More
particulary, which sizes are (nearly) equivalent to 750.16s?

I need new tyres all round for my Landie - a S3 109 - used about equally on and
off road, but off road performance is more important to me. It's on a mixed set
of 750.16s at the moment - hence the need to change.

TIA
