I changed my 86" to Neg. earth about 7 years ago, mainly because I had
a radio catch fire when it earthed out. I cant remember the exact
procedure, but it was fairly easy. I still haven't changed the ammeter
     wires over!

Your comment about corrosion is the wrong way round, which is why
     modern cars are Neg. earth.

Hi all, nice to see the list start mailing me again!

Andy is right about the postive earth being bad for corrosion I'm
sure.

That was the reason for changing to negative earth wasn't it?

Why else would cars be negative earth?

Warning crap joke to follow:

I'm positive about this!

Crap joke has finished.

I did mail the address/details out about 2 weeks ago, but you may not have
received it because of the listserver trouble that lro/lro-uk has been
experiencing. I don't have the address at hand at the moment, but it
will be hidden away in the lro archives! Also, one of the magazines
published it about 2/3 months ago (in the letters page if I
remember correctly).
Or try directory enquires, because you want to contact the
"Museum of Army Transport" who are based in Beverley (East Riding).
They send you a form which you fill in - chassis number, mil. reg. no.,etc
and return with a cheque for L12 or so. They return the cheque if they
have no record, or the information you supplied isn't sufficient, or its
a RAF vehicle, etc.

Hope this helps,

Richard

I don't know the full story but a couple of asides....
Kingpin are a producer of remould tyres. Often people forget that remoulds
are new treads remoulded onto tyre wall that have been used and possibly
abused before. Wall cracking is often a problem because of the age of the
donor sidewalls.
Tread patterns are deceptive. The Super MudPlugga (which incidentally is
now available from us in a 750 x 16 radial) differs from the original SAT
because of 7 very subtle differences which allow that pattern to appear
almost identical therefore Firestone cannot claim any copywrite. Originally
a firm called Ponthir tyre services commisioned the moulds for the
Mudplugga and for a period of time they were exclusive to Ponthir but now
the producer is able to sell them direct. I don't know if this is because the
original agreement has expired or if the producer has bought the
moulds/patterns. It could be similar with Tracker.

Tyres are one thing on which you cannot really make direct price
comparisons. Paddock and Craddock often play commercial/financial
games with each other and generally give the industry a bum steer. They
may well have bought large stocks anticipating an increase and now the
people who you have gone to have quoted todays price.

Dixon, I don't understand.

Are you saying that LR went neg earth as everybody else was and that
made neg earth alternators cheaper?

Why did the first people convert to neg earth?

Or is there something funny about land rovers which makes
pos earth better to avoid galvanic corrosion with ali/steel
interfaces?

Or do you mean the Yanks got it wrong and everybody else followed like
sheep?

Wibble, Steve

Because there was a huge market for - earth equipment.

Doesn`t matter if the Yanks got it right or wrong. They have the
market strength to do whatever they want. You want to sell into
the USA, it better not be too different or confusing for them.
The fact that the rest of the world followed suit with - earth
made it inevitable that you would too. Canada changed a hydro grid
in voltage and cycles because of the Yanks, equipment availability
etc. (Entire Province of Ontario grid actually)

Well, the SIII has almost passed an MoT. It went into a second garage which
did a much more thorough (but I think fair) test. They're currently sorting
out a seat-belt. I decided it would be quicker if they sorted it (the old
MoT runs out the beginning of next week!). Its a village garage and they
seem to know their stuff. (I wasn't convinced about the first place, and
might put an official complaint in - the two failure certificates make
an interesting comparison!!)

They gave me a warning regarding my front tyres!! I knew they were wearing
quick. I have 7.50x16 Mud Terrains, which give that nice military hummmm.
I think they might be remoulds.
Not knowing sod-all about tyres, I did see the article in LRO/LRW a few months
back, and decided that an All Terrain tread would suit me much better.
Recommendations please?

The bottom lines are:

- Mainly road use + some offroad use (still haven't taken it offroad, but
I *will*). From past experience long (ie Sussex -> Leeds return trips)
will occur regularly (say once a month or slightly less).

- Good wearing. The mud terrains haven't lasted that long really.

- Affordable. I can make the current tyres last a bit longer, especially as
I'll start to swap them around, but they do have to be quite economic.
I'm wanting to fit a soundproofing kit and a radio before the end of June
as well!

- 7.50x16s to fit an ex-gurka SIII 109 FFR :-)

Cheers,

Richard

The UK plate on my Series III appears to be glued onto the rear of the
vehicle with double sided sticky tape. I beklieve that the plate itself
consists of two parts, a clear plastic shield and a yellow transfer with
black lettering. I assume that the transfer is attached to the plastic
shield with some adhesive.
The question is, can it be removed and reapplied again? I am considering
moving it from the left hand side to the right hand side of the vehicle.

I am also about to buy four 205x16 Tracker remoulds but
have held back due to the recent discussions, specifically
        the problem with sidewall splitting.

Could Mike Rooth give us some more details on his trackers ?
How old were they Mike ? Could you have taken them back to the=
 vendor
and asked them to replace ? Would you still buy them again if you=
 could
        find them for =A335 ?

I have chosen Nene Valley Off Road to provide the tyres, wheels and
sort out a severe left hand tyre wear problem. Has anyone had any
        experience of them ?
