Keir,

Saw this go by:

I am with the NFU insurance, and every time that I ring to tell them
about changes that I have made to my Series 3 SWB (truck cab, 750's,
roll cage, V8, etc.) they just seem to say "Yeah Whatever, it's OK with
us"

I would advise getting them to write or fax something to you saying "Yeah
whatever" just to be on the safe side. I have had this experience too and
will be getting them to write to me saying a new engine is fine. They appear
to have the attitude that a Land Rover is a Land Rover no matter what you do
with it. I have an external roll cage and am about to have a GMC fitted.
They didn't even raise an eyebrow! I haven't made a claim yet so I couldn't
tell you if its anything to worry about but all reports appear to confirm
that the NFU is a good insurer who settles claims quickly and fairly.

Andy.

Subject: Re: NFU INSURANCE

The NFU mutual insurance seem to be disinterested on any MODs done to a
Landrover and don't even charge different rates for types of engine. They
only seem to base premiums on year of registration. When I queried this
the attitude was that due to being a Union for Farmers they are there to
provide a service and as farmers, wardens, land owners use the landies for
a variety of tasks it would be difficult to keep tabs on any modifications
made thus you take out insurance for your vehicle and that is generally
that although it is wise to make it known to you agent that mods have been
made.
However as more and more non farming 4 wheel drive owners are using NFU
mutual watch this space as I would imagine claims will start going up!
Thus they might start to differentiate more?

Being in the farming community for a number of years and being a member
of NFU I have most of my insurance policies through them and have never
had, nor have I ever heard of any problem of payment on insurance
settlement. Although if you tried to claim for damage whilst
participating in an ARC safari you might meet a few obstacles unless of
course you were covered for competition!

Subject: NFU's attitude towards paying out

Sorry for the long post but here's my story.
I had my 110 Tdi CSW stolen about three years ago. Under the NFU rules at
the time I had to wait for 6 weeks to see if the vehicle turned up (which it
didn't). They started the claims process (agreeing values etc.) in plenty
of time so, on the 6th week, I got my money. They didn't supply a hire car
whilst I was waiting :-(
So, I bought a cheap run-around. They allowed me to transfer this onto my
existing policy, which I didn't expect.
I'd owned the LR for 2 years and had it insured for the price I'd paid for
it. It was VERY clean and had FSH etc. I had the pictures of it being used
as my wedding car 2 months earlier to prove it. I'd also bought it at a
very reasonable price. Yet I was still pleasantly surprised when they paid
out the insured value (i.e. the price I'd paid for the car 2 years earlier).
I also claimed for the contents of the car (coat, tow rope, tyre pump, etc.
etc.) and they paid out up to their limit for personal effects (I think this
was £250).
When agreeing the value with the assessor I was worried he'd try to beat me
down on price. Our phone call consisted of him telling me what a horrible
place the world was these days, what a lovely motor my car was (judging by
the wedding photo I'd sent in) and how they'd pay the insured value no
problem. He said he also visited many LR garages and he'd look out for a
nice LR for me.
I'd had quite a bit of contact with the nice people at the NFU office who
knew just about everything about the LR (including it's pet name). I
received a letter from the girl in the office saying how sad she was to hear
of the loss of 'Dudley' and she hoped I'd find a suitable replacement !!!!!
When I found and bought a suitable replacement (a 12 month old 300Tdi
replacing a 5 year old 200Tdi) they transferred the balance of the insurance
policy (which I'd claimed on !) over to the new vehicle. My no-claims bonus
was protected and when the renewal came through the cost of the insurance
had REDUCED due to the fact I was now over 25 !!!!!
The length of the post is testament to the great service I received from the
NFU. I now have my 1961 Series 2 SWB truck cab insured with them. I told
them it had 750x16s on RRover Rostyles and that was no problem. When I said
it had a full cab roll cage they apologised for not being able to reduce the
premium due to the greater level of safety provided by the roll cage.
In summary (and if anyone has got this far, well done, I'd love to hear from
you) the NFU seems to be run like an organisation with common sense and with
real people making sensible decisions.
Cheers all.

So I ask again: Who is able to give me adresses of dealers or other
helpful informations about parts in the South of UK or other locations,
not so far from the West of Germany?

Specally the guy, who knows the german working for a dealer in UK.

Best regards, and a Happy New Year

Oh if such games were legal here in Denmark. The chassis is the vehicle
- you can replace everything else but the vehicle itself! You are
allowed to replace bits of the chassis, including the forks which have
the frame number stamped on them. I have this solution.

1.	Buy a new galvanised chassis
2.	Cut it in half.
3.	Remove one half of oold chassis - and new half as a repair.
4.	Take vehicle for MOT test and get repair approved
5.	Wait a year or two (MOT every two years)
6.	Remove other old half chassis and replace with new half.
7.	Take vehicle for MOT and get repair approved.

This seems perfectly legal according to current Danish regulations - it
involves a little patience, and stripping the car down twice in two
years (but I do that anyway?) and the end result is a completly new,
legal, galvanised chassis with just two welds at a critical spot - where
they would have been anyway if the chassis was replaced slower. Find a
way to galvanise these and you are home and dry.

I am considering it...

Anyone got a good contact number for the NFU.

My insurance company have no bloody idea. I tried telling them once that I
had modified my LR, that it was now safer than originally; better brakes,
better suspension, radial tyres, mudflaps......

The loading was ridiculous....

Next time I'll tell them there's no mods......they told me they even load
for a roof rack, if permanent fixture.

Just an idea....

why not come to UK on holiday...get the landy re-chassised....no one will
know as VIN plate attached to bulkhead. so long as you don't tell
anyone...can anyone know? can you be taxed? I doubt it.

This is just a hyperthetical suggestion of course....i would never suggest
that you or anyone evades paying tax...

Loz - who pays lots of tax!!

If only that was an option - the chassis number is stamped onto the
front right fork, and is the first thing they check at the MOT test
every two years. If the number isn't there, a rusty fork with the right
number on it had better be in your hand with an explanation as to the
reason why the old fork is so "forked", whilst the chassis is shiny
galvanised with not a paint bubble or old weld in sight after 25 years.

Crazy really - the entire object of the MOT test is to ensure safe
motoring - but the customs rules which are also controlled at the
testing station but serve to inspire to papermaché repairs and epoxy
crossmembers. Funny really, that it should be that difficult to keep a
car in such a great condition - instead of buying a new car with foreign
cash, we buy parts (some of which originate here) and labour through
danish companies, paying danish VAT in the process.

God this lilliput metality gets me angry sometimes. All I want to do is
hide in my workshop and bodge with the wagon until its a good as
get-it-can, and then drive slowly and safely. I'm not a vintage car
enthusiast, just a guy who lieks to keep his motor in tiptop nick and
enjoys driving a car which is well maintained, well tuned, and well
suited to the job in hand.

Maybe I should go back to just getting from A to B for the cheapest cost
per mile? No effin way!

And now to something completly different!

Adrian Redmond
