Subject: extended spring hangers

Hi All,

Have those people who have fitted the longer spring shackles at the rear
changed the shocks at all. I've got long shackles on my LWT and the
standard shocks seem to be too short now. Any recommendations???

Cheers,

Subject: Understanding partner

Dear list,

Please forgive the rantings of an excited man, but I need to get this off my
chest. Everyone else thinks that I'm mad, but I'm sure (I hope) that least
someone in this virtual pub will understand, even approve???

You may remember that I bought the 90, with a worn turbo diesel engine, well
after only a little persuasion SWMBO has agreed to a heart transplant, and a
little more. So I've taken the plunge and booked the 'Blue Beastie' in for a
300tdi and R380 conversion. :+)

Well that's got it off my chest. I just need to wait for the '' I wouldn't
have done that if I was you, I would of done this'', or if I'm really lucky
someone may say 'good on ya'. I've sold by soul to the Devil, just need to
sell my body to pay for it - can anyone recommend any ports/truck stops.
:+(

If you've got this far - thanks for the understanding, showing compassion on
someone who is beyond help - mentally and financially

You asked for it. I would have put a 1.1 Metro engine in there if I were you.
Spot welded (no need for bolts) to a mini gearbox.

What more do you want? :-)

Nice engine the A+, definitely a good replacement... You can put them in
complete with gearbox with the drive shafts facing fore-aft connected to
the front and rear diffs. There are a few snags, top speed is something
like 70/3.5 but at least you get into the cheap road tax (perhaps)... It
probably takes a while to get used to the gear stick facing the wrong way
too.

Subject: 110 chassis and body parts

Hi all

Steve Maddison currently has 3 (three) complete *brand-new* Defender 110
pick-up chassis/body for sale. They are in kit form so you could negotiate
for a chassis alone or any individual body panels required.

The chassis and body parts come from 3 complete knock-down kits that were
originally due to ship out to Malaysia (or some such tropical place) but the
order was cancelled. The complete kits were bought and plundered by Steve
for engines, axles, 'boxes etc to be used in three Foers Ibex that he is
currently building. For that reason alone there are no corresponding Tdi
engines, axles or gearboxes on offer.

I have no idea of prices but if the complete kits came in at the right price
in the first place, and if he has taken what he wants from them ........
well, you might get a bargain. Also, they are taking up quite a bit of room
in his workshop so I think he'll be keen to see the back of them.

Once again, this is brand new gear, crated, ex-Land Rover.

Subject: More advise

I feel very guilty sometimes asking this list for advise. I'm near the end
of a 3 year SII restoration, but having never actually driven one I don't
have that much experience and hence don't have much advise to give.... YET.
Having said all that I have the following problems and any tips would be
greatly appreciated.
1. Someone recently suggested the problem with my fuel gauge reading full
all the time may be due to the voltage regulator. How can I check this?
2. I have the old style individual wiper motors, and the copper arm on the
inside of the switch is broken on both. Does anybody know where I can get
these switches from, or am I gonna have to make them?
3 My speedo isn't working. If I take off the cable at the gearbox and
rotate by hand it seems to work OK. The end that sticks into the gearbox is
about 1.5 inches long, is this the normal length ? If it is then what's
likely to be my problem?

Many thanks

I've got a set of Pro Comps on mine. They seem to be OK, unless you
actually lift the whole vehicle off it's axle. I would recommend putting
some check straps on if you haven't got them as this will solve the problem.
(I must get round to doing it one of these days)

Alternatively, you can get pro comps in varying lengths, I think Chris
Perfect is the chap to speak to.

Cheers,

Tim Burt

Good on ya...
It's the same conversion I did a while back, one word of advice, make sure you
get a sedimenter bowl
fitted into the fuel line as it doesn't come with the kit and you might not
have had one to start
with. For the sake of a small extra cost, it's well worth protecting your
engine. I've only just
realised mine didn't have one (found out when I tried to find it...) so I'll be
putting one in mine
as soon as it reaches the top of my URGENT list of jobs :-)

How long do you have to wait now until it's done?

Subject: Handbrake woes

After a long run on the motorway (most times but not always) my handbrake is
very stiff when I first
lift the lever, however afterwards it is fine. Could it be sticking slightly?
It only started doing
this after the gearbox / x-fer box / handbrake were removed from the vehicle a
while ago.

Take it apart, handle, axle, linkage, drum - clean everything, maybe a
dollop of paint if your feeling bold, change any worn bits, lubricate
and fit. A good way to waste an afternoon and not likely to cost more
than a pair of brake shoes and a washer or two.

Thats not the way this list works....

>1. Someone recently suggested the problem with my fuel gauge reading full

The guage reading full could be caused by the cable shorting to the
chassis... go to the top of the tank, remove the wire from the guage, if it
falls to the bottom it is probably the sender unit, either broke or stuck,
if not can you measure the voltage on the wire? If the reg is working I
think it should go up and down, not permanently 12V..... if it does read
12Vish then yes your reg is probably knackered, what does the temp guage do?

The sproket inside the transfer box, either knackerd or perhaps not there?
