After several calls to identify exactly what I was doing/had done and why I was changing the engine they decided to charge an extra premium of 25UKP - and the reason why - because of the bull-bar. They said that they didn't have a problem with the wheels/tyres or engine conversion. Me, I'm happy because the LR is still cheaper to insure than the recently departed, 200,000+ mile Peugeot 205. Still going to give NFU a call when it gets nearer the time to renew the insurance though. The S2 has past her mot, all for the cost of the road fund license, that I don't pay. When I eventually get round to learning to weld, it I'll be much cheaper. Did like the fact that the examiner didn't find anything in addition to what I had noted to them to check. :+) - Many thanks to the list for the steep learning curve! Frank - I'll be looking to book accommodation this weekend for the Friday/Saturday - so all systems are go at this end, to go out and play on the 23rd. I'm booking accommodation for the Saturday so that we'll be refreshed for the journey back in the S2. Tyres - someone was asking about tyres, I've put 6k+ on the Grabber AP's I bought in December, and I'm very happy with them. They don't appear to be wearing that quickly on tarmac use, only about 10 miles has been off road though. :+( Tony 1970 88'' 2.25 S2a 1990 90'' 2.5td - thats still smokey - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 990109 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

They are a special kind of remould tyres using a cool tread system (wow!) for higher mileage and are commonly used on aircraft (80% of them according to the ad) so quite safe. The advantage to me is that they perform fine on road and off and have a wide range of tread patterns to suit different tasks - all at about 50 pounds a tyre on your doorstep. Sounds a bit like an advert I know but they have done me proud so far on and off road (worked well up until the point I attempted a lane passable only by tractors and ended up high and dry on the centre ridge in the lane - doh!) If you're interested look back through the digest where we went through all the usual questions of safety and someone said they'd been round the factory. I'm pretty sure it's either worn cable end/sprocket. I will try John B's suggestion of a smear of chemical metal first, as this seems slightly! easier than tackling the sprocket. With regards to the fuel gauge, I think I should have given a bit more info. With the original gauge and sender unit (I don't know if it ever worked) I got the following. With ignition off gauge reads full. With ignition on gauge drops from full by about 2mm. If you short wire from sender unit gauge drops down from full by about 4mm. I then obtained another second hand sender unit (I don't know for sure if this works but it looks in good condition). When connected up this gave exactly the same symptoms. Ahhh me thinks must be the gauge. So I sourced another second hand gauge (again can't be sure if this works but looks shiny and new). Now I get: With ignition off gauge reads empty. With ignition on gauge reads full. If you connect, disconnect or short out the wire from the sender unit the gauge does not move from full at all. I will try to get hold of a multimeter to check the sender meanwhile any other suggestions would be appreciated. P.S. I'm glad someone else has got Broncos. And I'm even more glad that they are OK.I've just fitted a pair on the front wheels of my 11A.They are the AT tread,in 205R16.So far I'm very pleased with them. They arent noisy, rolling resistance is low,and the steering is very light indeed. And at £32 a pop, including VAT and carriage,I'm not complaining price wise either!Word of caution, though.Looking at the ad in the current LRO, it seems that the firm has either changed its name (to Tyre & Wheel Co) or been taken over, and the prices given include VAT *but not carriage*. Has any other series driver had a bad attack of heavy steering caused by the front tyres? I had a pair of Pirelli Akros on the front, only just legal, granted, but the steering was agonisingly heavy. The problem seemed to be the sheer amount of rubber in contact with the road.Made parking a trial of strength, with the Rover often as not winning! Series vehicles werent made for radial tyres, really. But I must admit, the Broncos have changed all that such that I can now twiddle happily from lock to lock using one finger hooked round the steering wheel spoke. WRT cheap tyres, avoid Kingpin and International remoulds like the plague. I ran on them for several years, knowing no better, and the things *rot*. The sidewalls crack, and the tread pattern breaks up.In fact, the Akros on the front (bought part worn) were the result of an MoT failure due to uneven tyre wear, although there was bags of tread left.I had by that time swapped the back ones for M+S treads, rather than the Tracker tread, and with the advent of the Akros found that rolling resistance was way,way down, and presumably with beneficial effects on fuel consumption. YMMV,of course, but thems my observations..... Cheers Mike Rooth - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 990109 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Tim,
I bought the following from RPI all at a reasonable price.
3.9 camshaft £39.00 !
set of 16 cam followers £45.00
Timing chain set (inc both gear wheels) £28.00
All prices where plus the dreaded vat and the postage charge was around
the £7 area, they arrived within 48 hours.
