I have done this conversion on my SIII after busting 3 diff. The rear prop
is shortened by 55mm, if the splines are not good get a new one as it will

Hope that this is useful to you.

I found a sheet of army plastic explosive together with keys,
screws, coins, bulbs etc. which had slipped down the back of the
nearside fuel tank of my 1974 SIII lightweight. The bomb disposal
unit said it wasn't explosive, but they would, wouldn't they. They
did not, however, let me keep it and everyone who saw it or has had
it described, disagrees with them.

The disposal unit were more concerned in case there were detonators
or live ammunition "hidden" in the vehicle and were at pains to
emphasise that I should not be deterred from reporting other
suspicious items.

Adrian, is this piece of plastic about 5' by 10' white, and kinda hard?
.....?

A word of Warning.

You need to be careful reporting bits of expolsive, pyrotechnic, rounds etc to
the authorities. They may lock you up, as it is a civil and military offence to
own or carry any dems (stuff that goes bang) kit up and down the high st. Unless
of course your a soldier training with it.

At the end of any exercise soldiers have to declare the fact that they arn't
carrying anything they shouldn't off the trg. area. Or else it's a spell at the
Glasshouse for them.

"I have no live rounds, blank round, pyrotechnics or parts thereof in my
possession, sir"

Of course 'bits' do fall into the nooks and crannies of your ex-min. landie. All
the more fun for us to clean out.

XZL's are supposed to be a sand biased tyre as XCL's clear their
treads too fast and sink in soft sand, the Z tread pattern looks
pretty good for road use though, its similar to some car type
patterns without the open shoulders of the XCL its probably not so
good in mud !

OK this Tyre & Arches thing. From my undersatnding it is the tyre tread that
must be inside the arch, so if you have a tyre with alot of bulge, the bulge
can be outside the wing. I understand that this is in the straight ahead
position.

A mate of mine has a 109 with 255x85's, once for an MOT inspector he had to
bend his wing out slightly so that the tread was covered (a tree had
previously had other ideas), the side wall is 1-2" outside the wing but the
tread is just covered.

This fits with my experience of 31x10.5x15's on a Rangey. The tread was
inside the arch but the sidewall bulged outside by an inch or so. Never
had any problems with the MOT (from the tyre's that is ...)

What actually stopped the Rangie Mathew, and was any damage done?

The fuel filter should protect the injection system regardless of
whether a sedimenter is fitted. The sedimenter is intended to
prolong the life of the filter by reducing the amount of particulates
and water in the fuel before it reaches the filter. A clogged filter
will have a reduced flow rate and will ulimately starve the engine of
fuel but the fuel should still be clean. A sedimenter will also
give a bit more lea-way (not much I would think) if there's water in
the fuel.

On the subject of contaminated fuel.... Tesco in Dundee managed to
fill up several dozen cars with water a couple of years ago
(including a colleagues brand new H**da jelly-mould) following
a contaminated delivery. All managed to drive off the forecourt with
what was in the carbs etc so the traffic jam started 100 yards along
the road! They paid for the resulant strip-downs, car hires etc.
with profuse apologies.

Regards,

Iain

I get to carry loads of non military explosive stuff arround on a regular
basis, but I guess the rules are different.

Exactly, which is why I have to wonder if this is a "making work" =
business.
What happens is you go in withthe part no and the parts bloke (Steve =
Parker usually!) says "oh that's a ERC ****, or a ERC *****"
the good parts bloke knows the original - ten year old - number and no =
matter what superseded number he gets he reels of the old one and goes =
and gets it...
unless its a franchised dealer of course, in which case they just say =
they don;t have it in stock .

Reminds me, we were at Eastnor with a Camel selection weekend some years =
ago and a Disco lunched a track rod. L/R man gets on his radio (this in =
the middle of deep, dense woods) and within minutes a new one appears =
and they're fitting it. My mate says - "that's quicker than standing at =
the parts counter at L*x".....

Best Cheers

Problems with the Major, then _HUGE_ problems with Freeserve - a word of
non-Landy warning : Freeserve and MSN do not mix at all in the slightest.
Don't expect MSN to work after you've had anything at all to do with
Freeserve.

However...

Wheel arches - when I had 145s and 8-spokes on my little Mini Pickup
(alright, it's not a Landy, but the principle counts) I got away with having
only the top of the tyre covered by the normal arch. Then I switched to 165s
('cos you can go round corners even faster :) I had to put wider arches on.
Rather than put those horrible placcy things on, I got two triangular strips
of sheet steel and spot welded them onto the seam round the wheel one the
front (the rear does not need them - it's a pickup) and painted them to
match the rest of the body. I was concerned with the laws about sharp edges
on vehicles, but it's been through 3 MOTs since and it's not been mentioned.

Having said that, the garage I go to is 160 miles away and very friendly
(hence the long drive - it's also just down the road from my parents place)
and they've been very easy-going. Gist is, make sure that any arches do not
have sharp edges on them.

Cheers

Blocked filter was the immediate cause, however, I'm currently waiting until
the tank is low before
I drain and drop it to clean the whole thing out, including the fine gauze
which is apparently over
the outlet pipe within the tank as I've had repetitive problems for a while now
