Subject: Sound proofing

Last night I was talking to a chap in the pub (as one does)....

He was talking about a high density polymer / rubber sheeting with sticky
back, that they were using as a "expansion joint" filler / padding.

As its so High density (ie to take the weight of concrete slabs) it will
also have good sound deadening properties, the company is near Reading, at
12ukp per sheet approx 1m x 1.5m that sound (pardon the pun) worth
investigating!...

its gotta be cheaper than certain well known insulating companies!...

Anyone know who or where they are... phone number etc??

Best Regards
Geoff Wilkin

Hi,

I had this problem a few months ago. After rebuilding the carb to no avail, the
problem was
traced to the distributer. The hook on the end of the vacuum advance spring
underneath the
distributer base plate snapped, so the ignition wasn't advancing (retarding?)
under
load/acceleration. In addition to this the spring-loaded central contact bush
in the cap was
completly shot, so that contact with the rotor arm was dubious at best. This
was probably
causing spark energy to be lost in bridging the gap from the cap to the arm,
thus compromising
the energy available at the plugs. So, check out the ignition system first
before ditching the
Zenith!

simon.

Has anybody had any experience or, or got any comments about, Jeremy
Fearn intercoolers fitted to a 90 TD (*not* a TDi)? I've got somebody
who's tempted but wants some 'independent comments' first.

I have not had personal experience of them, but have heard a number of
comments.

Please note : These comments are not mine and are just hearsay. Please do
not sue me for defamation or liable. Thank you !

The person I know, fitted one to his 300 TDi 90. The first thing he
noticed was that the turbo noise increased dramatically.

The performance increase was considerably less than expected.

(This is the real hearsay part) - When speaking to the company, they let
slip that the advertised power increases we not due solely to the new
intercooler, but to the new intercooler in conjunction with an adjusted
boost and fuelling set-up. It was possible to gain the sort of power
increases claimed, but it would affect other performance factors of the
engine such as fuel economy.

My friend, (who knows a think or two about Land Rovers) also said that the
guy he spoke to was very cagey about how the advertised power increases were
measured.

His impression was that the system was not really worth the money he had
spent on it. And there were better ways to improve the power of his engine.

In your case, where the unit is to be fitted to a TD, there will almost
certainly be an increase in power, as there would be if you fitted standard
LR components.
It may well be worth costing the exercise using LR parts, (there was an
article in LRO about it some time ago), or failing that approach an
independent specialist to see if they can.

I want to make it very clear that I have absolutely no interest in this
company, and all of the above comments were made by a friend in passing
conversation. This is not an attack on the company involved and none of the
above comments can be proven.

(Do you think that's enough to stop me getting a summons ?)

Cheers,

Tim Burt

I think you may have something there, the fault only occurs if you put
your foot quickly on the accelerator, if you bring the revs up gradually
then it's fine.

I'll check the dizzy first chance I get.

Cheers.......

Hmmm I believe they are much larger then the 200/300 Tdi ones.
BUT... cooling a TD will produce more power, and they are on the limit of
their design anyway...

OK cool it, but reduce the output power back to where it is now, then you
may get a bit of relaibility as well.

Thanks very much, it's not my info BTW, I just nicked it from articles
submitted to the club newsletter. Theres more than that available in
reprints of articles from back issues, to members only though.

What are its details, reg no etc.

I'd be interested to know more, details, pictures etc. Anything I can
get to include in the newsletter is OK by me :-)

Get hold of a copy of Land Rover Owner International, a UK magazine
available most places. It's certainly available in the US but I don't
know more.

I have a few numbers of dealers I know have exported from the UK to the
US. Nothing implied or guaranteed etc by passing them on, it's just that
I have been to the places and they stuck in my mind. However, if you do
get in touch, let them know how you heard of them, another ploy to get
them to advertise in the newsletter you see :-)

Subject: Charging times

OK, here's a list of symptoms to throw our combined minds at:

1972 S3 diesel, with an alternator and new battery.

I drove away from home (after passing my test - yeeeeeeeeesssss!!!!! :-)
and it was getting dark, so I switched on the sealed beams. I drove to the
local parts store (for an exhaust bit, but thats another story) and getting
back in it refused to start. When it did this in the past I cleaned the
lead from the battery to the block, charged the battery and it started
again happily, and it's worked for around ~20-30 starts, although you don't
have to crank it much after the heater plugs. So I drove home (having
pushed it round the carpark, and dumping the clutch AND hitting the
starter) and the lights were getting dimmer and dimmer. By the time I got
home the indicators basically refused to tick, and I could barely see. I
turned the engine off, and went inside to get that diesel drone out of my
head. As an afterthought I went back outside to try the lights. Oh yes,
they work well now, don't they? I'm now charging the battery, and thinking
about getting a new alternator (even though the charge light goes out when
the engine runs). I've got 130W halogen spots with full beam - could these
draw more than a standard alternator can supply?

Thanks for any help on this subject.....

Let's try again....

Can anyone scan and send me the pages from the early 110 Manual or parts book
that relates to the vacuum pump fitted to those few Landies fitted with a 2.25
diesel. I have the pump and bracket but suggest a new timing chain cover is
also in order (perhaps same on later 110s?)

Anyone help?

Your 2 spots will draw ~20-25 amps when on. The alternator (I think) is a 43
amp device if it is original so you are going to hamper it charging the
battery if you use the lights in addition to say, headlights at 10amps
sidelights another 2amps, the heater fan perhaps another 10amps.......

i.e. if you had all that lot on you would be putting very little into the
battery. That is assuming the althernator is performing 100% and you have a
reasonable number of revs on all the time!

(Apologies for the crosspost.... good web site to view, however!)

In the last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to South American and
Mexico. It now looks like I'll be working in the UK by April and depending on
performance, my new job will cover the rest of our global locations in due
time. (Assuming that I don't screw it all up that is.)

(LR CONTENT)

We had our global team in the US for meeting this week. That consisted of GE
people and Carlson Wagonlit account managers from the UK, France, Latin
America, Australia and Singapore.

The GE person from the UK fits in well. He owns 4 LR's but I suspect that
with a little effort, his wife would gladly give them to me to get rid of
them. :-) Keith's a good guy but since he and his wife both have company
cars, he needs the room.

His CWT account person is from France. I had been warmed that Vero was a
piece of work but Keith told me she had *ridden* a motorcycle from South
Africa to the North Cape in Norway along with other friends who made the
journey a Land Rover.

When we met, I asked about her experience. I was happy to learn that there
is a web site with plenty of pictures and writing about their adventure.
Beside that, Vero is one heck of a person.

Take a look at http://hem.passagen.se/pfr/

I think you'll enjoy their site!

Cheers,
