I think you will find that the fan belt is self adjusting the same as it is
on 300Tdi engine.

Are you going to Villingsberg at the weekend?

Date: Tuesday, February 02, 1999 7:19AM

This may be a very basic question for anyone more familiar with things under
the bonnet than I am. I have a Defender with a 200 TDi engine. My question
is:
Shall the fan be able to move freely with the engine shut off, and shall it
move when the engine is idling? In the former case I can give it a light
push
and it spins very easily. In the latter case it barely moves though the fan
belt is moving.

No I am camping and paying the normal commercial rate, about 5% dearer than
last year.
Where I am going there is a 50% surcharge for the Eclipse week, unless you
go for two weeks, then its normal price. A sensible policy. It seems they
listened to the customers, as they asked us what we thought. There are
several of us who go the same weeks, and are friendly with the manager and
staff.

I am having the week before and after the eclipse. All with no surcharges.

But then the General manager does drive a 300Tdi 110 hardtop. (he brought 7
series 1's overland back from Singapore in the 50's, and has a few
interesting tales to tell!...)

They have 480 pitches and had nearly 800 applications for the eclipse week.
I listed my preferential pitches, and got the 23rd on my list. I still have
a good pitch, but not one of the best ones ie on the beach!... never mind.
I shall take a couple of extra water cans and two extra jerry cans for
diesel. ie I want to make sure I have enough fuel to get out of Cornwall!.
August is a really busy down there... It will be a right sod this year, even
the week after the event,as there will be others taking two week holidays
for the eclipse...

I am looking forward to going... Hmmm Maybee I should fit a few bracing
struts to the bull bars... or a bit of railway track instead....

Best Regards
Geoff Wilkin

OK, sounds like it's time for a trip to the garage and time to say goodbye to a
lot of money... I bet that strange new grinding sound that can be heard at
times comes from that obviously faulty fan.

A very good web site for information on all types of headlights is at :-

FME your right the duct does face downwards. I remember there being a small
article in LROI last year sometime, it listed all the part numbers for the Wolf
XD duct. I think it was call 'A wolf in sheeps clothing' or SLT.

I will be able to look it out at the weekend if you can;t find it.

Subject: A word of warning, please read...Don't manic mr. mainwearing

Morning all.

Just a short word of warning.

There is a virus flitting about that piggy backs on email - DON'T
PANIC YOU CAN'T GET A VIRUS BY READING EMAIL. It has cropped up
       on many mailing lists.

The virus is called "Happy99". It comes in the form of an
attachement to an email, sometimes the sender doesn't even know
       he/she has sent it.

*** DO NOT activate anything with "Happy99" as the attachment, it
may be a '.exe' or '.txt' file. Just bin the email, also empty
your recycle bin if it goes in there.

It is a worm virus, i.e. it latches onto your FAT tables and
mutates. It copies all the important files and renames them with
a '.ska' extension. When executed it creates files SKA.EXE and
SKA.DLL. Then it patches WSOCK32.DLL so that it export entries
for two functions will point to a new address at the end of text
section. The original WSOCK32.DLL is saved in the system
directory as WSOCK32.SKA. If WSOCK32.DLL is in use, Ska.A
modifies the registry's RunOnce entry to execute SKA.EXE during
next boot-up so it then gets loaded before WSOCK32.DLL.

Don't worry if you have/had it. It is relativly easy to fix. I
have the solution should anyone require it.

I am writing from the US and am not subscribed to the UK list, please e-mail

Subject: Re: Fan question

Is it overheating? The fan should turn easily when the engine isn't
running, either hot or cold. In the 300 a bimetallic strip in the viscous
coupling senses air temp coming off the radiator and as it gets hotter a
valve in the coupling closes, the coupling tightens and the fan goes
faster. If the coupling fails you will overheat. Solution is either a new
coupling, about 69 GBP - I have one on the way from the UK as mine isn't
working properly - or to put a couple of bolts through the coupling to have
a direct drive off the belt.

Please can I ask anyone buying these as they become available to double
check them minutely against their old records wrt UCRs in particular.

There seems to be growing evidence that the CoCos are taking the
opportunity to 'lose' a lot of RoW records when submitting info to OS for
inclusion.

Any cases of such, er, ommission should be addressed in the firstt
instance to OS AND the CoCo concerned, since there would seem to be a

You might be able to pick up some cheap rotors from the ex-millitary sales,
but a, they might be expensive and also how would you pick them up?

How easy and where could you refuel this chinook? Like, can you stick 4

I thought all Series diesels were like that !

Did the sluggishness happen suddenly or gradually ?

Things to check

Choked air filter
Choked fuel filter
Air filter to inlet manifold pipe (can look all right outside but collapses
inside)
Full travel of throttle linkage at engine
Binding brakes
Binding handbrake
Injector spray patterns
Injection pump delivery pressure
Injection pump timing

Should keep you amused for a couple of hours !

Good luck

damn things after they are replaced. Standing on a movable stair with what
resembles a timing light tracking the tip end of the rotor blade going past
your head faster than the speed of sound, is not my idea of the ten most fun
things to do.

Mine is similar. I would arrive at the Largs ferry slip on a hot Friday in
Summer, drive past the immense queue waiting hours to get across, roll
slowly down the slip and then cruise over to the island. Mind you, Cal-Mac
would probably charge for the use of their slip.

They probably find their way to Botany Bay near Chorley - after all, I

I would have thought cal mac would also require you to wait for a while as

Why not take this as a sign from above to change the fan for an electric
one? You can get the bits out of a scrappy if you're really stingy, or pay
£140ish for a Kenlowe one, either way, you get more efficient cooling,
improved fuel consumption and you can turn it off for water crossings.

You have to stay at a caravan site but there are plenty of them
around. They are open all year and have all the usual facilities. I
don't know who digs you out when you are parked up and it dumps
a meter of snow overnight. Maybe that is included in the price.

In winter you can round off your camping with skiing, snow
boarding, sledging and drinking beer. In summer, mountaineering,
hill walking, swimming and drinking beer. Autumn and Spring are
also ideal for drinking beer.

Richard,
my comment about "wittering" was my attempt at schoolboy humour, I =

you are good for my ego, my normal response to compliments about my =
column is that if you get half as much fun out of reading them as I do =
writing them then that's great 'cos it is my column and I should get =
twice as much fun as you......

As far as headlights go I am a bit of a nonsense really.
I am aware that some of the cheaper conversions don't seem to keep the =
reflectors as well as some of the more expensive.
However, I don't bodge a lot of things (while bodging merrily away on =
thousands of others). Brakes f'rinstance, I replace all fluid once a =
year, whether they need it or not.
I never replace seals, I replace the brake cylinders every couple of =
years. They're cheap enough and I like to know they're nearly new at all =
times.
Now, headlights. A pair of cheap units with halogen bulbs (55watt only) =
cost me 10-12 UKP a year 'cos I replace them every two years. My glass =
doesn't yellow, my reflectors don't wear away. A set cost just =
20-25UKP, why bodge?
AND, I wash my headlights, or at least give them a wipe over with a =
cloth, a couple of times a week. You know all that crud you're =
continually washing off with your washers and wipes off the windscreen? =
Well that lot is going onto headlights as well.........
there is a plastic bowl conversion as well, do it on all my motors, =
saves all that rusty sh*t at the back of the lights.....
again, thanks for your kind comments, I'll pass them on to the =
Ninety-year-old woman who really writes my column, oops I've told you my =

I have finally got round to changing the bottom plate of the transfer =

it with the drain plug at the top! It took me ages to remove all the =
'rubbery' gasket maker crap in order to fit a new gasket.
With the plate off, looking at all the 'gears' they all looked in good =

I can't believe that this is 'normal'. My questions are:

Subject: fuses

As a new and proud Land Rover owner I was checking the fuses last
night and found that a number had blown and been replaced with a roll
of cigarette paper. Ideally I want to exchange the silver paper for
real fuses.

No garage around here has ever seen the type of fuses used in my 1986
110. They are glass fuses but with pointed ends. I can get straight
ended ones but they don't fit in the fuse box. Are LR fuses special
or is it just that they don't exist here is Bavaria?

Can anyone give me a name or number or something for these fuses so
that I can order them somewhere.
