Ok. We now have all the relevant information about the eclipse in
Cornwall.

1. Pregnant women are going to be giving birth in the
streets
2. Everything you need is going to be 40 times the normal price.
3. Most things you won't be able to buy anyway so you'll have to tow
a trailer load of food and fuel.
4. There are going to be battles between New Age Travellers and
farmers.
5. The beaches are going to be full of landing craft and the skys
full of chinooks (which may or may not have repaired rotors).

I have given this problem a lot of thought and the answer seems to
be:
catch a ferry or use the tunnel (assuming no LPG) to the continent.
A great swath of France and Germany is also due to be eclipsed and
while hotels tend to be booked up, you can avoid all the above. Not
everyone will understand spoken english but this could be a problem
in the more out of the way parts of Cornwall as well.

Just an idea

As I live in Brixham and work in Plymouth I care very much. Can you
imagine what the A38 is going to be like that week? It'll be worse than
a rainy Friday night in the middle of summer. Glad I bought the bike!

As my Landrover is still in bits in my parents garage in Ipswich, and
my house is right in the city centre, I'll be ok as long as I can get
in the first time.

Apparently they are hoping to use the military police to help keep
things in order. This eclipse may well be the only excitement devon
and cornwall has seen in ages (apart from the two bodies found in a
flat at the bottom of my road)

Subject: He who doesn't ask .....

He who doesn't ask never learns (and throws away a lot of money)
so please excuse all my questions.

I have now got over the euphoria of my new (old) Land Rover (1986
110 station wagon, bright orange, v8) and need to start thinking
about the work that needs to be done.

The question about finding the right fuses I have already asked.
Here in Bavaria they are about as common as rocking horse s**t.

I need a tow plate. The one I got thrown in with the LR just bolts
onto the back of the chassis and hangs down with no supports. It
seems like a decent load would apply huge leverage to the four
retaining bolts. I have seen adverts for
1. adjustable drop plates.
2. fixed drop plates
3. non adjustable tow plates
What are opinions on each? Advantages? Disadvantages?

I need a jack. Everyone seems to advertise 4 ft lift jacks, a
maintenance kit and 90/110 adaptor. Again what do I need?
Opinions?

The chassis of my LR is in superb condition. What do I need to do
to keep it that way. Just regular washing or something more?

My mirrors are right out on the front of the wings to be sure they
get knocked about by any bushes I hit. Newer 110s have them on
the door. Can I order Defender 110 mirrors and mount them on my
LR.

That's it for now. Thank you all for your help.

Firstly you need to decide what you are going to tow.
1/ The one general purpose trailer.
2/ Also a caravan.
3/ Perhaps a plant trailer.
4/ Or anything that needs moving from A to B.

If it's just the one or two with the same hitch height then a fixed drop
plate of 4 or 6 bolt fixing is cheap and practical.

For more varied loads but of nominal hitch height the Dixon Bate
adjustable coupling (pin type) is more than adequate.

If you are going to be involved in all and sundry then an adjustable
coupling again but of the screw type, this gives an infinite no of
positions making it suitable for fixed pole or 'A' frame vehicle
recovery.

Intended use and price should be your guide along with weight limits
MAX.

>I need a jack. Everyone seems to advertise 4 ft lift jacks, a

Again What for? A high lift is great in 3ft of mud but a trolley jack is
more use every where else. (Where do you put a high lift on a caravan?)

>The chassis of my LR is in superb condition. What do I need to do

Well I was told that a chassis rots from the inside out and experience
has proved it so. A professional steam clean and waxoyl is about the
best you can do.

>Neill Hogarth
>Opinions?
>retaining bolts. I have seen adverts for
Hope you can make some use of this and I dare say that someone will have
there opinions that will differ from my own.
All the best with your new toy and keep on rovering.

My dream... if I ever win the lottery, is to arrive on the beach, in my =
Avis

caravan
from the back with the Hi-Ab crane...

Geoff, can't remember if you met my mate Geoff Smith from Bury, with the =
two Ser1s and the plough and saw attachments??
Anyway, his business if moving those large static caravans around the =
country.
Last year, I was passing the end of his lane when he pulled out in his =
Merc truck.
He was going to the Ser 1 gathering (that I wasn't allowed to go to =
'cos Marj thought I was still too ill) and on the truck bed was =
loaded... both his Ser 1s AND his caravan.....
That';s the way to travel methinks.....

Hi Tom,
I use MS Autoroute plus Ordnance survey Atlas of UK.
My Autoroute is a few years old although I believe the latest edition =
has postcodes not phone numbers.
I did have some software called "Locate" on floppy that gave the town =
for a specific phone code.
I can copy the OS map on CD for you and maybe borrow a later Autoroute =
if you can't buy one over there.
I'm trying to locate "Locate" (pun?) again, 'cos the floppy went =
walkabout. If I get one I can save it to CD.
Alternatively, give me a bell (telephone call) on 10706 224102 or 0403 =
889765 when you get here and I'll put you onto someone you can buy the =
stuff from.
BTW are you heading North at all? I'm about thirty miles north of =

S'alright for you. I'm married, very "attached" to the wife and work 130
miles NE of home. (How they hate it when I tell them that they're northeast
of home - I live in the *real* SE of england (you know, where the apples and
hops grow and who tend to be quite good at cricket (since we invented it))).
I go home on Friday night and arrive back at work on Monday (although
usually in the afternoon, so I can't complain about that bit).

At least you get to be with your wife each evening/night. I only have the
weekends (nearly one now, so sorry abut the spelling mistakes (shaky wrist-
you understand) (although my e-mail package won't allow them - so I can't
even put in the odd comic one).

Incidentally, the wife's the one who keeps the LWt going. I spend most of my
weekend tarting up the RR - I can't bring myself to tell her that she needs
to change the clutch slave cylinder. She'll spend hours pouring over the
SIII Haynes manual and just do it. Its so annoying. No more helpless females
(Last month she changed the alternator and one injector pipe on the 2.5 N/A
diesel lump in the car). Perhaps you should run an article in LROi about the
women who look after their own LRs.

The simplest and cheaper things to do with yr superb chassis, just apply it
with waste oil you have every time you change the engine oil (consequently
you have to wash and rinse this periodically, and apply it again with waste
oil afterwards) I don't know whether that any strict environmental

don't read the ST, they use words too long for me, and anyway I'm out =

But seriously... so far this week his office has received more than 50 =

That's as well as chairing a select committee this week, answering all =

evening) and chasing up the few hundred queries left over from last weeK =
as well as chasing some b*st*rds living in the IOM who seem intent on =

I have his email address, but I ain't giving out over the list,.

Subject: IMPORTANT LIST ADMIN MESSAGE - 'open' posting closing March 1

First note:
First the introduction of international lists for

French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and German speakers
	fr-lro es-lro it-lro nl-lro de-lro

With respect to those lists, I would most appreciate help from
anyone who would like to help translate the list nomenclature
(unsubscribing instructions, list notices, etc.) into the
appropriate language, and also assistance from subscribers
who can assist others (who may not speak my primary language,
English with subscribe and unsubscribe requests.

As you might expect, I don't actually read all the lists or
postings, and pretty much don't understand many words of
Dutch or Danish, and am not fluenent in any of the others,
so if anyone wants to do adds and deletes for the newbies,
or clueless readers who can't figure out how to check out,
drop me a line at wpc@caloccia.net.

(it is really easy - all you need to is send majordomo a line
like 'approve PASSWORD subscribe LIST USER@HOST' to add or
	remove someone else)

Second Note:

IF you are sending e-mail from a domain which is not subscribed to
any LRO list, then you should register these alternative 'FROM:'
addresses on the 'nolist' (this would also include folks not subscribed
and responding/reading from the web). All of the new lists are
starting out in this system, the existing lists will be converted on

March 1, 1999

All of the Land Rover Owners lists are going to a 'closed' posting
system, where your 'FROM:' address either needs to be a registered
subscriber of some LRO list OR your 'FROM:' address has to be on this list,
the 'nolist'. This is primarily to stop spam. Luckily most of the
lists have been rather free from spam, the exception being the RRO
list which is a major target - often receiving three to ten spams
per week, and often multiple copies.

The 'nolist' does not accept postings, although, each address registered
to the 'nolist' will receive a weekly mailing similar to those received
by real-time list subscribers. This mailing will contain unsubscription
information, and possibly other information.

There are basically two reasons for for the weekly message, first to keep
list current and to let you know that you are still subscribed.

As far as matching addresses, you may supply the top-level domain at which
you can receive mail - when you send from a host within a host under that
domain, then it will still be approved. For example, if you receive mail
at spam@caloccia.net and register that on the 'nolist' if you go to post
to Land Rover List from any host within that domain boston.caloccia.net
or london.caloccia.net, your from address 'caloccia@london.caloccia.net'
will still be allowed, as the software recognizes that <foo>.caloccia.net
is a host within caloccia.net, and thus OK.
