Unless the old drain plug is chewed up, you can re-use it. My 90 has a
copper sealing washer between the drain plug and the sump which I replace
(sometimes).

I stick the gasket onto the rocker cover with Blue Hylomar to stop it
falling off during fitting, but don't put any on the head. Make sure the
mating surfaces are clean before you fit it.
Use an engine detergent like Jizer or Gunk to clean the engine, rather than
petrol.

Subject: New heater for LtWt

This weekend it got just cold enough for me to yet again
rethink my idea of adding a sumplimentary heater to the
LtWt (I do this every year but then the weather changes
and I forget all about it for another 12 months!). Does
anyone know of a good donor 'all-in-one' heater which is
suitable: i.e. easily available from the scrapper, complete
with circulation fan, compact, easy to fit etc...?

I would like to fit it just behind the central bulkhead with
pipes running in serias with the existing heater (if that's
what you call it!?).

Thanks...

Funny you should mention a Stalwart. There was one at Chichester
Off-Road this weekend, as well as a Volvo BM Snow Track. The Volvo is
very impressive, but the
Stalwart is just awesome, until it got stuck :-(

But what a sight, bit like Gulliver in Lilliput, eleven Landies with

Just that made it worth the many buckets of water carried from my third

Hi Guys..

Dave was boasting about his pyromaniac, sorry pyrotechnic
skills, but what is a parafin gun..??

also Michael was selling a product allowing motors to run
on unleaded, is this an octane booster, a lubricant or both ??

NB does anyone out there know what the octane ratings
for 4 star, Unleaded, and super unleaded are ??

I'm interested both for the Series III which needs the lubricant,
(bit like me and Mister Fullers finest ales!)
but also for me Honda Legend, which is currently 4 star or
Super Unleaded only..

It is cork on a V8 ... held to the *cover* by a bit of evo-stik so it
doesn't flop about whilst you're trying to position the cover!

Subject: Loose Spark Plugs?

I've just changed the oil in my 3.9 V8, it having done 3000 miles since I
got it, and whilst waiting for the flushing additive to do it's work, I
noticed that 6 out of 8 spark plugs were vibrating!!!!!! After switching
off, it was apparent that these 6 spark plugs were loose by at least
half-a-turn! I finished the oil change, tightened up the plugs, and test
drove it, but there seems to be little difference in performance.

Has anybody seen this before, or is it just likely that they were left loose
by the last person to change the plugs?

Subject: snow and paint

Greetings from south wales with a lot of big white patches...

Cracking morning to wake up to today.......all the fields next to my
house were white and the lane and the Landie.....got to work and no snow
tho'....still may take a look at Sarn Helen tonight I can see there's
snow on the Brecon Beacons....

Anyway enough of the childish excitement over some white stuff.....

Just getting ready to paint the old racer. Primed the bare metal
yesterday with the self etch primer just got to decide on a colour. I
was going to use proper autogloss but my mate who's painting it said
"buy standard household liquid gloss, thin it with petrol....much
cheaper, sprays fine".

He has hand painted his big Merc van that he tows with gloss and it
looks OK from 10ft or more. Sprayed it should look a lot better. Any one
out there used household liquid gloss ??. Could be looking at 15 quid
compared to 45 quid.

At the end of the day the racer could be rolled at anytime and will
always have a good splatering of mud/dust. I don't plan on going slow
enough for people to pick faults !!.

bye for now,

Gareth

I was once driving down the moor road into town in my old SIII. There was a
bang from the engine, followed by loss of power and a loud chuffing noise. I
thought that something catastrophic had occurred, but all I could find was
that one of the spark plugs was missing from its normal place and was
dangling from its HT lead. I replaced it, but found that over several weeks
it would work loose again. I replaced the entire set with new ones and the
problem never re-occurred.

Spraying petrol doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I know that standard
paint thinners is pretty volatile but I think I would like to be well away
from your vehicle when the spraying is taking place.

Sounds to be on a par with the Hill Rally fees - the Scottish & Welsh Hill
Rallies are about 300 quid, the Lincs Hill Rally is about 200 quid.

I suspect the cost of the land for the stages is the biggest overhead - 20
stages can mean 20 land owners on that kind of event, pay them all a few
hundred quid each and it soon mounts up.

You should only have to replace the washer of the drain plug. Not the plug
itself.
The rocker box cover gasket is usually just of the cork type. I was taught,
just to apply a very thin layer of engine oil to the gasket before fitting.
It's worked for me.

We have 1 meter of snow in the back garden and have just spent

My childish excitement is wearing out, except when I ose the LR to

I did the rangie with a can of dulux gloss and a roller, as long as you
don't skimp on the coverage, it gets a pretty good finish with minimal
effort (i.e. no masking etc.). For a vehicle that gets scratched on lanes
most weekends, it's not worth spraying. As long as it's properly primed, it
will stand up to a lot of abuse and still look good. It doesn't retain the
gloss for long though, I suspect you would need a clear lacquer on top to
keep that.
