We painted a 109 with household paint (don't know what type) while sat in a car park in Tangiers. No sanding down, no priming, 30-odd deg C. It didn't look too bad and held out for a couple of years before bits started flaking, mainly where panels got bashed. Sorry Frank, but it was white - definitely NOT green. They do etch primer as well and generally it's cheaper than the stuff 'made for cars'. Coupled with the fact that it lasts, seems to keep its colour and can be spayed or hand finished it seems a good bet. Of course, the one advantage Dulux has is availability in a variety of individually tailored shades ... Range Rover with hint of pink anybody? What would the DVLA have to say about that? For the Mondeo, the exhaust pipe exits on different sides depending what size engine is installed. From: The Bickertons <Bickerton@compuserve.com> Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 13:24:43 -0500 Subject: Green rovers and trial fees Frank, I spent the weekend at Buxton LRC (free plug?), and one of the members there left our safety officer painting his new bullbar white to match the LR. Sadly he found a tin of pink paint, and picked out various features such as bullbar uprights, LR logo, wheelnuts, halfshaft caps, mirror backs, door hinges, rollcage (external on hardtop), canvas hooks, body cappings, rear step, and to cap it all he's painted "Rob's Little Pony" across the bumper. Considering it only took 3 hours it looks really good (in a surreal sort of way....) Just serving to reinforce the taste in green LRs... BTW at BADLRC the AWDC were running this month's trial - Buxton club charges UKP3, and they wanted UKP15. I reasoned that I could almost fill the diesel tank for that, and two of us went off laning. Some people preferred to trial, but as I never even come close to winning I'm not playing any more (there's a phrase to describe this, involving dollies and prams, but I misremember...:-) Anyway, I could buy a scrapper for spares for UKP250, or drive to Buxton from France, trial for UKP3 and return. Or invest it, wait 30000 years and buy a Td5 90 (inflation will push prices up too, remember!) Subject: Overfinch Rangie...
Well, I did it. I sacrificed my principals and bought a coil sprung
Landrover. At the price I couldn't refuse, and the wife was
threatening me with dire death and destruction if I didn't get it.
It's an '86 4 door, with a GMC 5.0l v8 (yippeee) through a manual box.
Uprated suspension and handling kit and handles like a sports car
(well, almost). The downside is that it's got 2 fuel tanks, and I've
just found out that they both leak! Still, a quick call to craddocks
and a new tank is winging it's way to me, and for less that the price
of filling the beast twice. I'll pull the auxiliary tank and get it
welded up later. The conversion was beautifully done, and I'm having
great fun, even though it's her car. When I've sold her old car, I'll
have enough room to pull the SIIa out of the garage and get back to
fixing it. Back to the joys of leaf springs :)

My wife gives me hell about driving the Rangie (she drives (and maintains - new alternator, high pressure fuel pipe, now a new clutch master and slave cylinder - nothing to do with our relationship at all) the LWt with a 2.5 N/A Diesel). Calls me (at best) a softy. On our recent trip to Austria, she drove some of the way. She's used to keeping "foot to metal" (the LWt has no soundproofing and definitely no carpet). We travelled at 90-95MPH all the way down the autobahn while she was driving. I kept up a more leisurely 80-85MPH (you know, usual excuses - "I didn't like the way he was driving...I wanted to put some distance between him and us." And she had such a grin on her face while she was doing it. Not that I'm criticising the wife in any way (especially since the major has started reflecting our mail back at us again). I've thought of putting an SIII petrol engine back into the LWt (don't know who did the conversion, but my 12 year old son could have done it better) and an overdrive to see if I can recreate that grin in the UK!!! Now I need to buy here a new (or good second hand) upper front bulkhead - or vent panel. Then she'll have fun fitting that while I'm away at work. It hurts me to say it but it looks ok from six feet away, just take all the

Hi Elwyn,
the following is part of an article written by Clive Elliott for the
Ex-Military Land Rover Club newsletter, you should join (okay Wayne?)
also see: www.yorkshire.u-net.com
Under snow conditions, unless all white painting is authorised by HQ
UKLF, vehicles and equipment may be painted white with disruptive
patterns of IRR green or black, in the ratio two-thirds white to
one-third green or black. There is no specific white IRR paint for
vehicles or canvas, perhaps the infra-red properties of ordinary paint
and snow are similar and besides the vehicles and equipment may well
have acquired a covering of snow. However the greatest concern are the
shadowy areas close to the ground which would give contrast in the snow,
the special paint for these areas is Paint, Finishing, Heat Resisting,
Brushing, White (COSA No H1/8010-99-943-4747). Canvas is painted with
Paint, Emulsion, Finishing, Brushing, White (COSA No
