There are a number of places which will recondition leaf springs - look in
the Vintage car magazines for adverts, like The Automobile. I considered
this when doing my 80" but the cost was not that different from buying new
ones and the old ones were in dire straits.

Subject: Theories anyone??

Driving in to work yesterday morning, the 88 was dragging badly to
the right.I ahd a quick look round, but could see nothing obviously
wrong. At lunchtime it was still the same, with stiff steering to boot.
After lunch,a further examination revealed a distinctly low pressure
front O/S tyre,which I reinflated.I took it to a local tyre place,
thinking (as you do) I had a puncture. They took the tube out, pumped
it up.Nothing.Not a bubble. They looked at the tyre and could find
nothing wrong. This morning its still OK.So what went wrong? The tyre
is a Bronco 205R16 AT with a tube, also 205R16 ie the proper tube
for radials.I could have understood the deflation had I not had the
tube in,afer all bead to rim seals occasionally do fail, but hardly
with a tube present.Anyone got any theories?
Cheers

For a less dangerous solution to a leaking but structurally sound petrol
tank, get it steam cleaned inside and out and use 'slosh sealer' in it.
It's a white latex type stuff that forms a skin over the inside of the
tank. We cut a new aftermarket tank down by slicing a 2 inch strip out
of the middle (the tank hung down too far and would have suffered during
trialling). Needless to say, the welding wasn't really up to the job and
it leaked like a broken sieve! One can of slosh sealer and it's been
leak-free for three years now. It's main use is for classic-car tanks
that are weeping - the petrol soaking through the fabric of the tank -
due to hairline cracks or corrosion. Works well and costs about 15ukp to
do a Slll tank. We got it from the local classic-car-supplies type
place.

Just my sixpenny-worth. I hate the idea of welding petrol tanks ...

Hi all,
At the moment I'm in the process of restoring a Dutch Army Diesel
Lightweight, I have managed to source most the the items that are special to
the Dutch Lightweight, but there are a few things that I'm having a problem
with.

1. Dutch flag stickers, I need 4 of these

2. Another sticker that is in the shape of a shield and is half blue and
half red witha gold star in the middle of it.I need 2 of these

3. The Dutch radio equipment that was on this type of vehicle.

Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I hopefully be
in Holland in the March / April so I could pick them up them then, once
again thanks.

There are for the little traffic master things that you stick to your
dashboard. The detectors check the speed of the passing traffic
and relay the info to base, which then use the aerial to tell you
where the congestion is.

> I am just being nosey.

Nothing wrong with that. What they don't say is that it is prob a
Series Landy holding the traffic up ;-)

I've seen a few around Notts and Lincs lately. There's one on the way into
work.

One of my mates works for the county council and says they are there for
counting cars. You know all those local radio station traffic reports, well
they get their information from a central computer nowadays. These little
boxes count the cars and tranmit the data to the computer via the little
arial thingys.

Anothern mate has been done by speed cameras before and reckons they are
plain clothed police cameras which can do you for speeding, read your car
tax and measure your inside leg measurement. I've driven past one at 80/85
before and nowt's happened so I tend to believe the former theory.

I've got it on the bench (well, leaning up against the garage wall) - it's
getting the centre bolt out of the leaves I have a problem with.

Another spring resisted all attempts to remove it from the chassis - 6 ft of
scaffold tube refused to persuade the bolts to let go. However, I waved Mr.
A Grinder at it and it just fell off! Amazing!

All I have to do now is find another pair of shackle plates... :(

New Trafficmaster sensors. They are extending the coverage of their system
to all major trunk roads - to be switched on in the next few months.
Interestingly, these new sensors are actually cameras (with infra-red LED
illumination built in). The system reads your number plate - actually only
the centre-5 characters (for legal reasons) - which is then transmitted to
the central computer. When the same characters are read again at the next
sensor, the system can tell how fast you have travelled and so how fast
traffic is moving.

Dunno! Could be something else I suppose!!! The ones I am
thinking of are about 12 feet high (never checked tho...) and have
"squarial" type detectors at the top. On m-ways there is only one,
on A roads there are two - one pointing in each direction.

sounds like a good wife to have, mine won't even attempt to drive the Land

I'm sorry also to tell you that you'll never get an decent performance out
of a LtWt.
I had the 2000TC engine out of a Rover fitted in mine. It was "good" for
90mph with Rangie Diffs and an overdrive, but at anything above 65 it wanted
to shake itself to death.
You'd have to spend an awful lot of money on bodywork (bonnet doors etc)
before you could get a LtWt to do any real speed.
Best just accept it for what it is....... a plodder with character.....

I would suggest that the Plod have had a great deal of input into a system
which can record _just_ where car X was on such-and-such a time. In this
country, civil liberties are disappearing faster and in a more insidious
manner than ever before.....so do you _really_ believe that they would
restrict the software to only read the middle 5 characters? and then risk
prosecution fro failing to turn over required info to the Establishment?

Yeah right.

Just remember, Frank, That you said that.

Ah, well. Suits the wife then (I really am glad I married her - she's almost
as laid back and relaxed as I (and the dog) am - besides of she's prepared
to mend her own LR, I can spend more time on the running rebuild of the
Rangie (sorry, but its Blue)).

I can't vouch for the type of CD she'll be wearing at Billing this year.
Just be glad that I haven't got round to enabling her e-mail account on our
network at home yet (so am I, otherwise she'd be reading this reply) .

>sounds like a good wife to have, mine won't even attempt to drive the Land
>Rover, even on ASDA car park.

Mine kicked up a hell of a stink (glad she can't read this) when ASDA
imposed a height restriction on their car park down here.

Where I live (deepest Kent) we have snow as good as anyone else in the
country. We live 10 miles from the nearest town. I happen to rather like my
family and wish them safe. We have nothing but Land Rovers. Seen a Volvo hit
by a couple of tons of LR? Makes a very good mess. BTW the SWB is Bronze
green. The LWt is matt green (about to be repainted - probably in camo
colours - green and black). The RR is blue. Sorry, but it looks good in
blue. I need to change some of the paintwork (lost in white powdery
something....it will be blue).

Incidentally, she'd love to see (as would I) her name in print in your
column. If you have room for a Sue Taylor mention as a wife who looks after
her own LWt next month (which will arrive not too long after her birthday
(22/2)), I'll stand you a couple of pints (or maybe more - who knows) at
Billing (unless work keeps me away - the kids are desperate for another
visit).

Clive
SIII SWB (Very dead, currently - smoke from behind dash last time I tried to
fire it up)
SIII LWt (Used and enjoyed daily)
RR EFi - '86 so not too much luxury)

You're right, Geoff. It reads the lot, but only uses the centre-5.
