Its probably wise to drain and flush the system while you are working on
it, but not necessary.
If like on mine you don't have a drain plug on the bottom of the rad and
the engine block drain has lost its little wings, with the result that
to drain the system means removing the bottom hose, I wouldn't bother.
The heater is normally the highest point in the system so although you
will get some water (sorry, coolant!) running all over the place when
you take off the hoses to the heater, it shouldn't be that much.
When you take the heater unit with the matrix in it out of the motor and
take a look at it, then the rest of the water comes out all over your
feet.
Wear wellies, but not green ones!
Same when you are filling up after fitting the new one, like Adrian says
take care to remove air bubbles.
I use a jug of water for the last drop pouring it into the hose which
goes {:-> to the upper of the heater matrix pipes until water just
begins to run out of the heater pipe.
