>>>>It was once said that '... there is no such thing as an accident.' To a
large extent this is true, the only exception being unpredictable
failure of vehicle or human. Why not handle the cause of 'accidents'<<<

anyone see the accident programme on TV a couple of months ago.

It started from the fact that accident statistics per pro have remained the
same over the years (apart from the war years without lights) despite the
continual development of safety in cars.
the best explanation to my mind was that the safer the car the more likely
it was to be driven more dangerously.....
this worked until I thought of the LR which I consider, because of the
chassis (and in my case and others the roll cage) to be one of the safest on
the road....
but then I added the equation that slower, rattly, noisier means a
perception of unsafe compared to a noiseless modern cocoon.....

best bet then, to me, is the change in the Volvo driver in recent years.
This is perceived (rightly or wrongly I cannot say)as one of the safest
vehicles on the road "built like a tank" etc. And at one time it was driven
by the most considerate drivers on the roads.
Today this has changed and a Volvo driver is more likely to cut you up than
years ago.

This is all about perception of course, but I've tried it out on some
friends and they agree.

Best Cheers

My first response to this is "clever dick" :-)

The advanced driving people frown on braking and gear changing at the same
time. You are unsellting the car by braking and also by changing down. A
unsmooth down change may be enough to force a wheel to lock up if done
while braking, and it will certainly disturb the balance of the car.

By the time you have finished braking you should have left enough time to
change down before the bend, etc. Braking and the subsequent changing down
should be done in a straight line.

I'm sure they would allow you some leeway to remove your hand from the
wheel to operate the brake in an advanced test. Certainly sounds preferable
to not letting you...

Subject: 90 V8 Ignition Switch

Hi all

Anyone help with this one?

While out this afternoon stopped to fill up (an all too regular occurrence
with a V8!) and when I got back in and turned the ignition - nothing!

A bit of fiddling showed that the ignition lights and radio were coming on as
usual but when turned to the start position everything went off. A bit more
fiddling and it became obvious that the key was turning too far and switching
it all off and that the spring return to the normal position wasn't working.

If I switch on and turn the key gently to the right position the starter
functions and one the engine fires I have to turn the key back or the starter
just carries on running.

So the question is has anyone experienced anything similar and if so is there
any easy solution or is it a case of a new ignition switch and all that
replacing that entails (quite a job if Mr Haynes is anything to go by).

PS to Frank - any news on the manual? - looks like I might be needing it!!!

I am looking at buying a parts list for my 1986 110. In the
catalogues there are two, one up to Aug 86 and one from 87. My
LR was first registered in Oct 86 (in Switzerland).

Does any one know how I can tell which list I need? There must
have been some major change to warrant the new list but what?

The learning curve when you buy your first LR is worse than
starting a new job. Thank God that there is this list

I think you'll find that the change was all part of the changes which included
the turbo diesel being introduced in place of the n/a one. If I'm right it was
also the time at which the front door handles changed from being the series
III type lever to the later push button ones. This should help you decide
(provided you have a diesel and it is the same type as fitted as when the
vehicle was built and/or the doors haven't been changed!)

Someone else might be able to come up with the appropriate VIN nos.

Of course I could be completely wrong......

Neil,

The 109 is your saving grace, but I feel I must ask (for the sake of the list)
what is so so good about the new range rover that we must all have one ???
I wont even bother with remarks on a F**d.

see anywhere, beer I candrink anywhere. But to eventually solve that "knit

Probably two things at least to look for, is the gearbox crossmember square
or tubular; are the cappings galvanised or not? An earlier beast had square
crossmember and galvanising, later ones did not. Although in a LR
environment any mixture is possible......

very well put
I too try to bear in mind that the 'other' driver may be confused, lost or,
genuinely in a hurry for something truly important.
However, I commute twice a day, there is a fair bit of lane changing (on
motorway slip roads etc) involved and this does lead to a lot of bullying
and downright dangerous driving from people attempting to accrue an
advantage (that often disapears at the next jam or set of lights). These
people, if I am able, I WILL NOT allow to get away with it. My theory being
that if those who are able (ie big dirty beaten up Land Rover) 'punish'
them, maybe they'll not try it later on a confused person and cause an
accident.
However, rather than drive dangerously myself I will ALWAYS back off.
BTW my other comments on Volvo drivers becoming dangerous these days was not
specific, but in general it is true. I do not believe - or like not to
believe - that anyone with enough in their head to enter this pub would
deliberately do anything anti-social, whether on the road or anywhere else.
