Subject: Engine swapping
Hi people,
I've a 1985 2.25ltr petrol Defender 90, and have been thinking about
swapping the endjinn for a TD of some description! Apart from the y2k
problem <g> I'd also like to see a bit better fuel consumption. So far,
advice has been that a TD would give between 22 and 28 mpg (compared
with the 12 - 20 the petrol sucks up). Given the number of miles SO and
me drive per year, the fuel savings on those figures would pay for the
change in just over a year!
So, are there any obvious problems associated with this kind of
activity? Are we likely to see any power improvements - the beast does
a cool 65 - 70 on the flat (on the motorway) with its current engine.
Any gotchas?
Awaiting howls of derision :-)
Jason

Given the number of miles SO and me drive per year, the fuel savings on those figures would pay for the change in just over a year! Right.. I did this with a 84' 110 CSW NA Diesel Apart from the fuel pipe possible needing a return line It should be just a nut and bolt job, mine was. I used all 110 stock parts, and it was easy. I dont know if the engine mountings will need to be changed, but I doubt it. What gearbox has it got?... 5 speed LT77 (no prob if it is). You will need to mount a fuel filter on the bulkhead (couple of built in nuts in the Bhead for that) The wiring is dead easy, usual senders, some heavy wiring WILL be required for the heaters, Stick in a 200 Tdi plenty available at not too great a cost. Use a stock 90 Tdi exhaust, You will need the later rad with the intercooler. 300 UKP new, so make sure you get one with the engine. Tdi Starters are expensive 160ukp, get one with the engine! I have a complete list of bit to do it for a 110. Its all the silly little brackets and bits that add up. I may be able to find the list and let you have a copy. Do bear in mind that its for a 110, but with a parts book, you can work it all out. It took me two evenings prep, and two days and evenings to complete it. I was working alone and in the back garden. Its a good mod, I get 26-27 Mpg driving normally, 22 mpg with a 1 ton caravan (60+Mpg) and 19Mpg in Cornwall with the Van. Thats over a period of 3 years and 36K miles with 3+K towing. I would take advice from one of the engine changers in LRO mag, ring them up and say, I am thinking of doing a swap out, I just want you to supply the mil, and ask them about mountings, petrol tanks (second hole in it for diesel return line), etc etc Just make sure you get all the bits with the engine!. I have a crate of bits!... I paid 4.4K ukp for a new 200Tdi Mill, ALL the bits complete exhaust, rad, intercooler, ALL pipes, jubilee clips, nylon tie wraps, right down to the "Tdi" sticker for the wing. I recon there was over a grands worth of parts (all genuine of course). Let me know, and I will dig out the list if I can find it. I can scan it in and mail it to you. It will give you a good starting point. Subject: Galvanised chassis
Anyone out there with a several year old chassis which was glavanised
inside and out from new, who hasn't painted the chassis? How does it
keep after a few years.
My new chassis arrived today, and I am reluctant to paint it - why start
a tradition which will only take several days of my time every couple of
years to maintain?
On the other hand, is there anyone there who HAS painted a galv chassis?
How did that keep? Did the paint begin to flake off?
What's the experience on this one?

Subject: Drowning in Rovers
There will not be a strip down on the D110 CSW this year - this vehicle
must be on the road and working fast.
Anyway, today I'm drowning in Rovers - my new Series III 109 galvanised
chassis arrived from the UK this morning, so the weekend agenda is to
get the axles, springs, wheels and hubs, engine, gearbox, firewall, fuel
tank and tranny's mounted - to make a little more space in the workshop
for the D110 which arrives later today - that has to have the equipment
bay in the back end fitted before it can be inspected by the customs
people next week.
By the middle of next week even I will be tired of Rovers - especially
black enamel paint and light green.
This will be a fun weekend!

Subject: Which carburettor ?
The best thing to do is to get a reconditioned Zenith from Greenways
Engineering in Somerset (01749 860267). I've got a Weber fitted at the
moment and according to form it strangles the engine cos the body is
too small. These guy's remanufacture carbs and fix the low tickover
fueling problems of the originals. They also give a lifetime warranty
of their work. Don't get a new Zenith as they are terrible quality.
I'll be getting one of their carbs in the next month or so. I don't
have any connection with this outfit, incidentally.

Subject: A Roverly day
This has been a somewhat Roverly day. Nine o'clock this morning my new
galvanised chassis arrived, and I've spent the day painting the last
parts before the assembly this weekend and next week. Besides a new
galv. frame, all steel parts (firewall, rad panel, firewall chassis
supports, oil filter and battery tray, steering rods, hinges, U'bolt
shoe-plates, fuel tank, inner wing mudguards, door sills, and lots of
brackets) have been sandblasted and metalised. Besides rendering the
steel rustproff, sandblasting (with fine steel shot) and metalising
makes the surface 100% clean and rough, which means that the metal
really takes to paint. I've sprayed the parts with red oxide rust
preventer this evening, tomorrow they get two or three coats of black or
green.
Apart from the engine block and gearbox, both of which were rebuilt a
couple of years ago and are running fine, every other part on the
vehicle has been dismantled totally - stripped, cleaned, degreased,
washed, painted and reassembled. All bearings and gaskets have been
replaced, new swivel balls and tie rod ends fitted and new nuts and
bolts throughout. The entire exhaust system is being replaced and the
new one gets two coats of 650°C resistant paint. The engine and
peripheral parts have been painted bit by bit. All that remains -
besides assembly, is to beat a few dents out of the front wings, and
paint the bodywork light green before assembly.
So the 109 is well on the way to being fully rebuilt and on the road
again. Originally from 1976 - a youngster compared with some of the
vehicles which figure on this list - I bought her in 1984, my first
Rover. This rebuild - more so than the rebuild of the 88" last summer,
proves that given free labour, a Rover can be brought back to life.
Doing the work oneself means that many features end up far better than
when the vehicle was new.
And to top it all, the day ended with the delivery of our new Defender
110 CSW (Woodcote metallic green) It's a real beauty, and I'm looking
forward to driving it - but first, before it can be registered, it must
be fitted with space for our film equipment, so without number plates,
the farthest I can drive is around the yard from the workshop to the
house - I've made that run several times this evening!
My wife identified a typical Rover enthusiast situation this evening. My
dealer/mechanic Marius Bertelsen arrived with the Defender, and instead
of us both admiring the new investment, we both dived into the workshop
to admire and gloat over the 109" chassis. Marius sold me the 109 in
1984, followed by the 88 in 1985 and another 88 a couple of years ago.
It's taken me 15 years to bring the three of them up to tip-top
condition, and it's taken him 15 years to get me to buy a brand new car.
Hanne came over to the workshop to see the Defender, and there we were,
admiring every detail on the 109 chassis and motor rebuild, whilst the
Defender stood out in the rain. I tried to explain that the defender
isn't mine yet - well it doesn't feel like mine - we've bought it, but
until I've stripped it and rebuilt it, which will be in about 5 or 6
years, then it'll be just another Rover! (Although a warm, fast,
comfortable and presentable Rover to boot!)
Anyway - that was Friday - I like Fridays (at least when they're like
this)
Have a good weekend's rovering folks
:-)
