pleasure of sitting in a 1976 V8 range rover. I was working with Raynet
who were providing search and rescue for a walk across Exmoor to raise
money for cancer research ?232K.

Those rangies are much quieter than my S3, and quite comfortable,
although I was a bit concerned how many people we could fit in, my S3
can take 9 (legally), but we managed 11 in a rangie, 5 crew and a team
of 6 exhausted walkers. Fully loaded we then had to negotiate a 2 mile
narrow muddy track, the walkers were now in high spirits but I was
uneasy as I'd seen the drop to the river in the day-light and the track
was starting to cut up!

All good fun though, can't wait till next year.

All good fun though

Subject: overheating

I am having some problems with overheating on my 300 tdi
I have tried a new thermostat a new temp sender unit I have had the radiator
out this weekend and back flushed the rad and the engine, no rusty water etc
The rad feels cold if I put my hand on it after a good run. The top and
bottom hose feels warm and I guess the fan must be working it has some
resistance to it
If I turn it by hand and the temp goes from hot to normal ish if I let the
engine tick over for a while it only gets very hot if I am going over 45-50
ish ..and I seems to warm Up very quickly from cold.
Has any one got any other ideas that I could try or am I missing something
far too obvious ???

Also, don't forget that spare wheels are not light and having it bonnet
mounted makes opening the bonnet a fitness exercise. If you are working
under the bonnet do you really want all that weight sitting above your head?
My 88" S1 used to have the wheel here and I always put extra support in
two broom handles cut to length ) when doing minor things under there.
Anything taking longer I used to remove wheel (and bonnet - easy on a S1 ).

I know that S1 bonnets will crack with the weight - have L/R fixed this
problem over the years or are you just moving the problem from the rear door
to the bonnet hinges etc.

I am prejudiced, I like the look of Landies with the spare wheel on the
bonnet.
That said, all the Land Rovers I have had over the last 19 years (2
Series IIa 88", a Series III 88" and the Series III 109", not to mention
the IIa 88" in 1973!) have had the wheels on the bonnet with no problems
at all with the bonnet hinges or the bonnets themselves either warping
or cracking due to the weight.
The Series III 109" has the heaviest wheel I have owned but I still have
no problem lifting the bonnet, it is heavy no doubt about that but not
too heavy. I usually check under there at least once a week and for the
last few months practically every day ( due to a loss of water from the
rad, which now thanks to the list appears to be cured!).
Keeping the bolt threads greased means it is not to difficult to get the
wheel on and off.
The bonnet support is, I have found, very stable just a matter of
lubrication and checking the split-pin regularly.
>From all the comments about rear door mounts there is no way I would put
my spare on the back door, a separate mounting bracket maybe, but not on
the door even with an extra hinge.
But that's just me, my mate Dunk has his on the back door and has had
no problems for the last 2 years.

	Hi Guys:

My series III has the bonnet mount kit, but I prefer to keep the
spare inside the car (Yep, had a spare nicked in the past)..
Only thing I'd say to Neil, who was thinking of fabricating his own,
is the official kit has bonnet strengthening, which is needed! as Geof
commented its a lot of weight
it also slightly limited visibility, but thats not a strong point in
a Series III hardtop anyhow :-)

I used a rear door mounting kit to fix my spare to the bonnet, it looks
nice up there, but had a few visibility problems off-road so I moved it

I'm worried about it flying off the roof and hitting a granny 3 cars in
front :-(

Mind you, putting it on the roof raises the center of gravity of the vehicle
which is possibly more important off road than on.

So where should we put it - the rear causes the door to break,
- the roof cause too high a CofG
- the bonnet reduces visibility and can cause the bonnet to break
- inside takes up too much room

You could post them to Land Rover Direct, but what make and model do you
have, and how old...
We will always listen to your complaints (plenty of whingers on here) but
wee may not be able to help you with a factory fix!...

if its an old LR then we will talk about it all day! (and even for the newer
ones as well).

Anybody got the address of the complaints dept at lode Lane?

OR.... email to watchdog@bbc.co.uk

or judy@itv.co.uk (Their version of watchdog)

Land Rover are still working in the 50's and probably havent heard of
computers let alone Email or the Internet!.

Let us know how you get on, and what the problems are, there is pleanty of
experience here on the list.

We like to have a good laugh, so ignore the inane comments from people like
myself!!
But we may know of some of the problems and have done cheap or simple fixes
for them.
Franchise dealers tend to be expensive!.

Post the probs here, and we may have some answers or advide on what to do...

I am sure the rest of the list members will have something to add.

On the box over the weekend, guy closed a deal with a Dutch LR
dealer for a new disco at a saving of >6K UKP. The dealer pulled
out at the last moment saying he'd been threatened with losing his

Out of interest, the EU imposed an 85 million ECU fine on VW last

MOD-spec Defender (Wolf ?) has it mounted on the side. Army drivers
are obviously specially trained to cope with the imbalance.... or is
it imbalanced enough to cope.. something like it anyway :-)

Would a civvy landie get away with the spare mounted like this?

I had it on the bonnet on my SIII lwb, no problem with the hinges, but in case
the thing is riveted to the bonnet, check the rivets, I had my carrier nearly
come off as the rivets corroded through...found out when I saw a gap when
lifting the bonnet for the usual oil check.

It's funny you should say that. I live near the L/R road test route and
regularly see vehicles from the factory on their daily run. They are often
towing a trailer with the spare wheel bolted to the top. This must be the
place to put it. Then, of course, when you go off-road, you use a pto driven
trailer and have six wheel drive ;-) Of course, on the first sharp turn the
trailer will probably push the vehicle over :-(

Spray anti-corrosion treatment of your choice into the bulkhead and all the
box sections of the door frames, bonnet etc. You can get good coverage
inside the bulkhead in the vent area by removing one of the fixing screws

Does this mean I have the ideal configuration?

Thank you all of you for the lively discussion about spare wheel
mounting.

I admit I had not considered the granny in the back of a Panda
(with calf bar) angle. Unfortunately it seems that no one knows of a
source for second hand mounting kits or drawings so it seems like
my Rover (BMW) handler is going to get richer and I will get poorer
:-(

I would have thought it sticks out from body too far, unless the wheelarches

Welcome to the pub.

Now you know how difficult it can be to get a sensible answer round here, but
it's good fun nonetheless and as others have said you usually get the answer
eventually.

If you have a newish Land Rover and you want/need to contact them about a
problem try

Land Rover Customer Care

SOLIHULL

Tel 0121 700 3636
Fax 0121 742 3790
No email as far as I know

I have found them helpful if you have a newish vehicle which has been serviced
by a dealer but a little less than interested otherwise.

Hope this helps

This truncating is getting more extreme - is 6 lines too much to quote??

Hey Neill,

have You tried the non-franchise dealers located in Germany ?
They usually can get everything a franchise dealer can get
(and more, because they have more experience than the
average BMW/Rover dealer) at much better prices, although
they are not quite as cheap as in the UK ...
If You need tel.nos./adresses e-mail me directly.

Subject: Station wagon rear seats

I'm trying to remove my rear seats (three of them) in the back end of my
new 110 CSW - there are 10mm bolts through seat frame/brackets into the
tub, but I cannot see if the underside of these are captive, or just
hidden by the underseal. The bolt turns but doesn't seem to come up. I
didn't expect the seats to be just bolted through aluminium and carpet,
I expected some sort of anchor plate?

Has anyone tried to remove these and can tell me?
