Subject: More autogearbox problems

Hi

Rember my gearbox that lost all drive. Well the saga continues. It was
"clutch A" as the kind people on this list had suggested and the mechanic
has put a new clutch in and it now has drive. The bad news is that he has
just rung me to say that it still has a problem. It sets off then changes up
into first then second then third then drops straight back to third. It
never gets into fourth and it starts jumping up and down between third and
second like a thing possesed. Also it occasionally refuses to change out of
first at all. I never had this problem before the clutch went.

Any ideas ?

Yours frustratedly

Pat

(and no sarky comments about manual gearboxes Pierre !)

Around here most heating oil is actually gas oil derv, complete with
the quininzarin (probably not the correct spelling) colourant added.
The thinner paraffin grades cannot be used without damage to engines
so thats not coloured, how much 20-50, ep90 etc to bring it to the
correct viscosity, and the cost trouble etc puts most people off
trying that route.

GCHQ under "Echaalon" (deliberately mis-spelt) scan all un-encrypted
e-mail passing through various points on the web, this is done in
concert with the usa amoung others and they look for "key-words" and
phrases, ostensibly to prevent crime...the thought pole-ice are a
coming...

Anyone got any comments about using polybushes off-road - the blue
comfort ones that is, I know standard yellow are too hard? They'll go on
a RR ... perhaps ...

Must vary across the country in that case. Our heating oil is
most certainly not derv. It's clear and only slightly more viscous
than esso-blue (do you still get this?). Also works perfectly (and
legally) in a primus stove.
Having had to deal with an elderly friend's leaky raeburn a while
back, the thought of how much worse it would have been with coloured
diesel all over the kitchen floor just doesn't bear thinking about.

Iain

There are two types of heating oil: One is derv, the other
is parrafin.

Hi all - the US-spec 90 has a bumper/step unit that fits on the rear
crossmember. Does anyone know if these are available in the UK? My usual
parts supplier (and source of parts info) just closed shop.
TIA

The rear step unit is shown in the english language Defender accessories
catalogue here in Denmark, so i guess it's available in the UK.

If you mean the integrated rear step/tow bar it is available in the UK as a
Land Rover Accessory and I believe the part no is STC7635 but it costs around
250 ukp!

I think this is it. It is more than just the step unit, it runs the whole
width of the rear crossmember.
BTW a friend just checked in the US and she was told US1300! So 250 quid
sounds comparatively good.

I know where there were some ex military snow chains which I believe fit 750 x
16 tyres, but have no idea how much they are worth. There were two new and two
used of the same type. Mostly chain construction attached to a yellow metal
ring device, presumably to aid fitting. The asking price was 30UKP per pair.

If this is the same unit that is fited to the 50th V8 90, then as long as you
like rust, you'll be fine. I had two of these fitted before the 90 went back
and each one within a month was as rusty as an 1988 90 rather than a 1998 90.

I have seen only one other 50th 90 since then, and that also was suffering
the same problem, but I never saw the driver to speak to him about his woes.

As long as you paint/coat the thing properly before you attach it, you'll
probably be fine.

Thanks for the response Mike. I'd be interested in these if they
fit. Can you give me more details off-list please.

The coils and shock will be on a 90, mainly road use 120 miles a days, with
reasonable green lanes and possibly in the future (by Billing??) towing a
small caravan - I'm getting too old for camping and the S2a gets most of
the
real abuse.
It's noticeable now that the whole vehicle leans well in bends, it may
because I'm going that little bit quicker because of the Tdi or they really
are getting tired - or it's just a land-rover. I was hoping that the 'pub'
would have some ideas
 Tony

I doubt that leaning in the bends would really be attributable to worn
springs - much more likely to be shockers or stabaliser

Your original description did sound like the Sealectro ones recently fitted
to my series II's being about 5inches long (longer than the AVM's on my S
III) and with a chrome end the inner of which is twisted to lock and unlock.
not entirely sure what spares you'd need other than seals. I once bent a
spring in one of them which was a pain as I couldn't get a spare in the UK.
