Unfortunately here in Brum the local clamping scum believe they can clamp
anything. I'm just waiting the opportunity to return a clamp to them, at
their expense, from my Australian agent.

WRONG
'Q' is used to signify a vehicle for which the year of manufacture cannot be
proven. This may be a bog standard Metro - one of my neighbours had such a
delight for several years.

Before I get meself in trouble (again):
Firstly, the wrong expression was used ('written in a hurry' remember?),
secondly, I wrote it concearned " *not* the leaf-sprung LR"... looooove those!
And besides, it was in jest, had a -virtual- drink too many.
Next time I'll keep in mind others may *read* "in a hurry"..... :^)
Will try and be absolutely clear next time.
Mine is a Series as well, *and* GREEN !
Feel like painting it black right now (matt)....

 But:
The RR-problem was the topic: the owner (not me) seems unable to make
the V8 run stationairy below 2000 rpm, any thoughts on that?

 Best regards,
 Marijn.

 Cheers,

 Marijn.

Subject: Filling steering relay

Today I had problems filling the steering relay with oil.
All started last week, when I decided to remove the plug from the
steering
box. I found it was empty. So, during last week I bought 1 L of EP90 to
fill the steering box and relay. No problem with the steering box, but I
couldn't manage to find a way to see if the realy had oil and how to put it
inside.
I followed the instructions in the manual, but it seemed that after
removing the top screws of the steering relay, there was no hole to the
inside of the unit.
Can anyone teel me if there's a way to check if the steering relay needs
oil, and whats the best way to put it fill it?

Frank and Mike,

My original "pun" on the Crewe here in Virginia is starting to have more and
more parallelisms. Crewe, VA was/is a railroad town for the Norfolk/Southern
railway. As with its sister in the UK, big yards, maintenance sheds, etc, but
has gone to seed with time. The popular folklore is that it was named because
it was the changing place for engine crews between Norfolk and Roanoke (nee
Big Lick), VA. Now I'm starting to think one was named for the other.

The winch came off an 88" S3 (so will fit 109" - it can't see wheelbase cos
there's an engine in the way - just don't mention longwheel base near the
front of the car). I don't think it would fit anything without a proper
front end (ie dumbirons), unless you've a welder and some time. (Note -
anything fits anything with a big enough hammer).

What? A new straitjacket? - Ah! Asbestos.

:-)
John B
Now with some more welding on the chassis, to hide the floor to ceiling
crack in the chassis front leg. Bloody leaf springs.

Err... you Vaseline Rubber gaiters????... Yes OK on the leather gaiters. But
rubber perishes and splits.
As far as I am aware a split rubber gaiter is an MoT failure point.

Can you clarify?.. (please)

Geoff

Not really...

The "Q" plate is for when they cant verify the actual date of manufacture.
Namely the vehicle is a basket case, or exceeds the eight point rule for
modified vehicles.

Take a look at the DVLA site, it explains it all there.
Namely a pre '72 vehicle on a coil sprung chassis should be on a "Q" plate
and then does NOT become Tax Exempt.... PLEASE TAKE NOTE...

The rules are very clear!!!!... I know of one vehicle already being "Q"
plated and the Tax Exempt status being withdrawn by the DVLA. They are well
aware of thre situation with Land Rovers.

Look at http://www.open.gov.uk/dvla/regrebil.htm

Especially the "8" point rules.

There are three very small bolts on the top of the relay (180 degrees
apart).
I removed one, and dripped (as advised) oil into the hole, It took ages but
I got 100cc + into it.
I used a Syringe (no needles!) to drip the oil in. It worked, but was slow
and tedious, as described by my "advisor".

It does work, but requires grest patience. The syringe (100cc job) was
excellent, as I could control the flow easily.

I hate to be pedantic, but given the time of night, 3x180 = 540 degrees...

Anyway, I thought that the relay would come apart in your hands if you took
top off, i.e. lots of springs and stuff flying in your face.

Or am I getting ahead of myself and thinking about digging further into the
innards of said relay.

For what it's worth, my father replaced one bolt on the relay top the relay
on his lightweight with a grease nipple - makes it far easier to
re-lubricate.

Relays should be self-maintaining, shouldn't they? i.e. you don't need to
regrease them...
