From: JPitcher@sperry-sun.com Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 20:04:31 -0600 Subject: Re:Reliability As I was the one who started this, perhaps I should explain. I joined the AA at a motorway service station 4 years ago, due to the fact I'd got a grumbling front wheel bearing on my IIa, and as I was towing a bl**dy great trailer I seriously doubted it's ability to get me home before it collapsed. Funnily enough, I don't carry spare wheel bearings with me and I'm buggered if I'm going to change one at the side of the M5 anyway. At the end of the day, I got home just before the bearing finally collapse, so I didn't need the cover. The only cover I want is recovery only, I don't want some amature (i.e. Non landrover owner :) messing with my pride and joy, and I can diagnose the problem as well as anyone (most of the time). I carry a load of small spares with me anyway, plugs, points, leads, hoses, oil, water, brake/clutch fluid etc. and the tools to fit them. I carry enough tools to do quite major surgery, if I have to. But, when faced with something like a collapsing wheel bearing, then I'm going to need assistance to get me home (possibly). Anyway, I've just been informed that the RAC does personal cover, so as soon as I'm able, I'm going to investigate, and if the shekels are right, I'll switch. I like greenlaning, and I believe that now I have the option, I'm not going to support an organization that want to stop my family and I enjoying them. If the RAC or >anyone else for that matter, offered the same cover, rather than one policy for My RAC policy coviers ME, not the veihicle. That means that I can be in anything and they'll come and get me. Also as I joined as an RACMSA member I got a 15% discount and they will recover me from just about anywhere. They came and got me off the quarry when I landed on the oil pump - covered in mud. I also like the attitude of the patrol personnel. On the three occasions I have had to call them, (all for major failures fue to over abuse), the patrol man has had one look and said, 'OK, what's wrong with it then'. In one case I didn't even get a patrol because the operator realised that I knew what I was talking about and sent a full lift recovery straight away. On the down side, for one of the above recoveries, on a bank holiday in May I had to wait 1 hour 45 mins to get picked up. At least it was a nice day.
