Only happens on tick-over and its a rattle/knocking (not much good with sounds). Got a horibble feeling that its the timing chain or the tensioner ? does that sounds reasonable ? Is there an easy way to find out, or do I face taking off the timing cover ? cheers for any advice Mark - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 2 -> | Table of Contents | <- Digest 990329 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I have 2 Escort vans, same age , 1 diesel & 1 petrol. If I fit the Diesel engine, etc in the petrol shell ......then the petrol van "has been modified" (insurance).........right ? But if i fit the petrol van shell to the diesel van period . is the diesel van "modified" or has it just had a part replaced with an identical part..just like replacing say a mudguard ?] I ask this to you folks as you often comment regards legality and.... as the long suffering boyfriend of a lass who bought a 11a last year with a new chassis fitted ................and every other part totally !2@£$%^&*() I could do with converting my van ASAP to save money to help finance the running of her car now that it is very nearly "not in bits" :-) BTW if any of you chaps live/ visit near Stoke I can get 205/16 & 235/70/16 tyres "real" cheap (not topcaps, not Bronco) but you need to be local (no dodgydeals here... just that I do a bit of work for the tyre company and can get a good deal ) Hope you fellas dont mind me asking this Question - but feel free to ZAP me if i shouldnt have. BTW any mac users on this alias ? I have read this through and dont think/hope that i will not offend anyone Regards kevin - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 5 -> | Table of Contents | <- Digest 990329 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: AVAC11@aol.com Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 16:07:10 EST Subject: Re: DVLC Question Well, if you fit a different engine, you just notify the DVLA of the change. Then next time the insurance is due you check it in as whatever the engine is, i.e. diesel or petrol. I you reshell the thing you might end up with a q plate as its a used shell. As its not a classic car in any way, the dvla might take dim views of that, especially if you have to prove which components come from which van. Subject: Up and running!
After three months rebuild I finally finished assembling the 109" this
weekend. I spent yesterday night filling all the holes with oil, grease,
water, fuel, clutch fluid, and left it to stand overnight on a clean
floor.
This morning - not a drop of fluid on the floor. Could not believe my
eyes.
Then I spent a few minutes bleeding the fuel system (diesel). I don't
bother with bleeding the filters one at a time, I just open the bleed
valves on the dist.pump, then turn the engine over for 10 seconds to
bring fuel into the lines, then work the lift pump manually until fluid
starts spraying out of the dist pump. Then jump in and turn her over.
After three months of total strip down and rebuild, the engine started
first time, and apart from two fuel lines to injectors 1 & 2 which were
a little loose, it ran fine. Whilst it was ticking over, I opened the
bleed valves again to let the last bubbles out.
The timing seems a tad advanced, but she's off to the workshop tomorrow
for a check-up and timing set ready for MOT & emissions test.
But after running for a couple of hours, I can see that there is no air
left in the system, all fluids seem to be holding tight, and I have
given her a run around the field to check the moving parts.
While the chassis and motor are at the garage, I'll paint the 17 body
parts, then next weekend assemble the rest and the job is done. I'll
take some pics and post them next week.
Cheers!
Adrian Redmond

Browser -> ]From: "Tom Murkin" <tom@riverside-repairs.freeserve.co.uk> Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1999 03:15:30 +0100 Subject: HELP! - Starting Problems I came to start my Land Rover today, after being off the road for a couple of weeks, and guess what? it wouldn't start! It's got a 2.5 N/A diesel engine in it, and I have checked everything I can think of. So far I have bled the fuel system (lots of times!), replaced the fuel filter, checked all fuel conections, checked the glow plugs, and checked the stop solenoid. Some of the work carried out while it was off the road included a complete oil and filter change, checking and adjusting the valves, and replacing the air filter. At first it started and ran for about a minute with lots of blue smoke but no power and no response to the throttle, then nothing, not even trying to fire. It appears that there is not much fuel coming out of the injector pipes when disconected, but this is difficult to check on your own. It dampens a rag, but does not appear to spurt out like it should, though there is definately fuel getting to the injection pump free of air bubbles. Could it be the injection pump? if so why has it failed suddenly when it was running perfectly before being parked up? I do have a spare injection pump in unknown condition, but don't have the time to swap them :-( Any ideas gratefully received. I have already wasted nearly a whole day on the stupid thing, when I would far rather be using it, I had hoped to get a lot of work done with it today :-( Thanks in advance for your ideas, Tom SIII 2.5D - currently not running - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -[ <- Message 8 -> | Table of Contents | <- Digest 990329 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

No questions asked. As I saw it, the engine is a standard part, and I didn't have to modify anything else on the vehicle to accommodate the change so to all intents and purposes it was a Series 3 Petrol. Like I said, I have no idea about the legality, but I didn't have any problems from the insurance people or the DVLC. Of course it's all in the past now.........
