Input shaft oil seal.   Only a few pence and about half an hour to change.
(assuming that the diff is OK)

Firstly check all the breathers including the flame traps in the rocker cover 
to carb breather pipes. These must all be clear for a V8 to breathe properly, 
and any blockage will lead to oil being pushed out all over the place.

price sounds right, but what's wrong with yours, these axles are virtually
unbreakable (ie I haven't broken one and if I can't......)

Thanks for the info,
To start with it was displaying a lot of backlash. OK checked the
propshaft UJ's and yes one leg of the rear joint was kaput so I replaced
it, there is still excessive play (KLUNKING) also while raising one
wheel and turning the raised wheel the axle is very tight, oil OK, also
when prop removed it feels like the halfshaft splines are worn and
riding over each other half way, no I haven't removed the half shafts
yet but when I do if they are worn on the spline surely the diff will
be???

Any pointers on common faults gratefully received. 

Whets this about an axle spreader?

To finish on a quick one the newly acquired 90, checking oils this
weekend and a red auto box type fluid ran out level plug. Obviously the
level is OK but whets the red stuff??
