Mate on alternator no.3 in as many days,
I pop round, the alternator is whacking along fine but 12v at battery?
Battery disconnected, no, starts fine.
Hey look, burnt wire, what's that for,
Hey another, oh no, same one, other half.
Another one, oh no, middle bit of last 2, welded to exhaust pipe...
Ah, this wire goes from alternator to starter, (or possibly once did)

Anyway new wire (old pair of jumpleads) and the inherent possibility that
all 3 alternators were fine and he seems to be off again.

Sorry M.

I don't mind Alasdair. I count it as a case of a second opinion/view of a
problem being helpful. I'd spent so much time thinking alternator, that
Occam's Razor never properly entered my head. At least it's fixed, just
move any problems to other parts of the system.

Hinge Panels, Yes they are made, BUT watch out, some dont come with the
little bracket at the top where the wing bolts on to.

Join the Lightweight club, they have a supply.
Whats more they are good quality and fit properly.

As do their footwells. (Footwells are thicker than the original bulkhead!)
Dot use ordinary S11 / S11 footwells all the angles are wrong.

I have just done both Hinge panels and footwells. (all supplied by the
Lightweight club)

I think PWB do good hinge panels.

Anyway, my lot come to nearly 100UKp, but worth it.

I now have a perfect lower bulkhead, and a New top one :-)))

The rebuild progresses, albeit slowly. Did all the back brakes and new pipes
this weekend.
ie been playing with my new brake pipe flaring tool... Expensive but worth
the money.
By the time I have done the Lightweight and the 110, and the newt rebuild it
will have almost apid for itself.

Give Craddocks a ring they have just broken a couple of LtWts and they were
quite cheap on the bits.. But didnt ask about the top rail as I have a new
one. (from Blanchards ££££££ OUCH)

My only suggestion is to bite the bullet, and fit OEM parts (ie in a
Girling or Lockheed Box)
or Genuine LR parts if money is no object.

There are cheap Pattern parts out there at half the OEM price. I would not
fit pattern parts on "Mission Critical" sections of the vehicle, ie Brakes
and Steering.

Fit quality linings ie Mintex Lined shoes,

IMHO its not worth the saving on Brakes and Steering parts..

I would also fit good Shock Absorbers, as they will affect the steering and
braking.
ie Named Box ones,

Think safety first and wallet second.. on these areas on your LR.

Geoff

 >of a 4lb club hammer I would think. As I intend to keep the LR for ever
> [ the chassis is really sound ] I am going to replace the whole lot i.e.
both drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, drum retaining screws - as I am sure
that there should be more than ONE in each side - , and bleed screws. The
adjusters seem OK with full movement and the flexible brake hose looks new.

No, there is only one - the wheel, when fitted, effectively sandwiches the
drum between it and the hub so it won't fall off.

<< Q2 - what are the 'best' replacements for use with the standard springs now
and parabolics in the future - anyone with experience of Pro Comp shocks?.>>

Chris Prefect supplies Pro Comp Explorer shocks with his parabolics. I have
them fitted to both of mine and they seem very good. They are also quite good
value at about £30 each. The extra travel they provide is essential for use
with parabolics as you get much greater axle articulation with these springs.
With standard shocks the travel would be limited and the axle would hang on
the shock on full travel.

> Only in Australia ...
This is based on a story from a local paper.

Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a local pub.
Late in the evening the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated
that he could barely walk.
The man stumbled around the car park or a few minutes, with the officer
quietly observing.
After what seemed an eternity and trying his keys on five vehicles, the man
managed to find his car which he fell into.
He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar
and drove off.
Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off (it was a fine
dry night) flicked the indicators on, then off, tooted the horn and then
switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed
a little and then remained stationery for a few more minutes as some more
vehicles left.
At last he pulled out of the car park and started to drive slowly down the
road.
The police officer, having patiently waited all this time, now started up
the patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and
carried out a breathalyser test.
To his amazement the breathalyser indicated no evidence of the man having
consumed alcohol at all!
Dumbfounded, the officer said "I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the
police station, this breathalyser equipment must be broken."
"I doubt it", said the man, "tonight I'm the designated decoy."

Subject: Hiccups

I was driving home from a weekend away this afternoon when my Series III
developed a bad case of hiccups: the engine kept cutting out, usually at
the most inconvenient moments. After a trouble-free winter, it was
clearly attention seeking. I pulled into a service station on the A1 to
investigate, and was just checking over the HT leads when a bronze green
90 pulled up nearby. A helpful chap got out, expressed concern, and told
me where the local ex-mil LR specialist was! Clearly a good omen - after
removing the rusty bits from the bottom of the fuel pump bowl,
reattaching the distributor cap with *both* clips (doh!) and giving the
electrics a coating of WD40 for good measure, it ran sweet as a nut all
the way home.

Funny, isn't it, how having to stop for mechanical troubles can make you
glad you drive a Land Rover?

Subject: Re: electric turbos

This talk of Electric Turbos has got me thinking about how to increase HP.

Speaking as a layman it would seem that the air pressure that the engine
actually sees is well
below 1 atmos i.e. the air pressure in the inlet manifold. It would be easy
enough to measure by
putting a guage on the servo pipe but I'm going to guess perhaps 25% less than
1 atmos? All
these turbo devices are doing is trying to increase that inlet air pressure.
Anything that can be
done to raise the inlet air (mixture) pressure is going to help boost power so
a more free-flowing
carb/air-filter setup would probably work wonders and probably also help mpg
and cost less than
any fancy head work or a turbo.

Has anyone done any tests on how the inlet pressure is influenced by different
carb and air-filter
setups? I now the Webber single port is popular (infact I tried this myself for
a few months but I
wasn't impressed) but what about a twin port Webber or even 2 twin port Webbers?

Here's a well written about subject :-)

My Stage 1 came with shinny chrome wheels fitted with 206's and 4 spare
wheels fitted with 750's, these were the original wheels. I had never really
appreciated the size difference until I put the two side-by-side.

I have been offered 4 second hand (100 miles only) BFGs at 50UKP ea. (+vat).
In the considered opinion of the list (without taking any responsibility for
their replies of course), would it be worth changing the 206's to BFGs? I'm
hoping it may help my fuel economy and increase the top speed.

Also, someone calculated how far out my speedo would be, can anyone remind
me?

Subject: Police decoy

One of my friends decided to play a similar trick on the police after coming
out of a night club, dropping hos keys, fumbling with the lock etc. Didn't
take too kindly to him being stone cold sober when breathalised - ending up
taking his car apart and finding some very obscure reasons why it wasn't
road legal. After a very long delay was given - vehicle defect form??
resulting in the need for rectification - hence another MOT and even more
time wasted.

he said that he'd never to it again.

Tony

Only a little bit more of your money - years ago it used to be a 100% or
more loading.... That is once they get up from the floor.

HI Andrew,

I assume you mean 205's and not 206's.

The Stage 1 was never fitted with thisa size of tyre, the 7.50 x 16 was
ususal. You don't mention what type or size of BFG tyres you are
considering, that would help.

At the least, you ought to put the 7.50's on, the vehicle should return a
better MPG if you do any cruising. (If you see what I mean !)

Cheers,

I haven't done any scientific tests, but something as simple as an air ram
can increase performance, as it provides a degree of forced induction at
speed.

Absolutely right !

Subject: Places to stay

Just a note to explain the comments that young Mr Bickerton raised.....

No, I haven't gone totally mad and I don't have a Swiss Alter Ego.

I know Kat and Nick Sonderer (by e-mail). They are the couple of Land
Rover nutters who have opened up their house for LR travellers.

The 'Place to Stay' system was set-up after a message I got from them asking
if I could post a message somewhere on my site which advertised the fact
that they would be willing to meet and greet fellow owners. I talked to
them and took it a step further in order to try and develop something a
little more complete.

The journalist in question was (obviously) wrong in saying that the
information was on their web site, it's on mine.... but it was inspired by
them.

At present there are only a few people who have registered, but I have just
got another person (I assume as a result of the mag coverage) who is willing
to open their doors.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Cheers,

Well my copy doesn't, just dropped it in the bath (yes thats where I was
going to poor over the countless ways of lightening my bank account :-) )

Any chance of a water proof edition for those of us that are too kak-handed
to hold it? And before anyone askes I've only had one beer tonight.

Cheers

I was also interested in the Machine Mart pipe bender to make a roll

Can anyone tell me what the specs. for roll cage tubing are i.e. dia,
wall thickness, etc.
Thanks
