Actually, My land rover hasn't left any parts on the road. fluids, steam, rust dust, maybe. Memorial day weekend, not unlike some others, found me in the Auto Shop at RPI. Saturday was somewhat leisurely, replacing a few door hinge pins, the left rear wheel bearing, (after what seemed like an eternity of trying to get the drum off), and then the fuel line. Sunday, started out when I decided to help my friend Chris, by going over to Albany to fetch a uhaul trailer so he could haul his '70 Cadillac DeVille Convertible back to Maine. Of course, he still had to put in a clutch disk and pilot bushing and before he could finish the engine swap on his tow vehicle. So we go to Albany, and two the behmoth car trailer back to Troy. Well, how should we go up the hill ??? The obvious best answer eluded us at the time, so we choose a reasonable alternate: we'll just go up sage, and run the 4-way stop sign when we get there.... Well, all was well and good, except these two bozo's on the lower part of Sage, go out of their way to pass us while we're going up the hill... and they stop at the stop sign... Ok, so I decide to stop, as were at the less steep part. Then I go to start, and, well, there's this noise, and we're rolling backward. So it takes us a couple minutes, but then we put the truck into 4wd-low , and lock the hubs and manage to start off up the hill again. occasionally chirping the front tyres along the way. After it cooled down I did the water pump, and then we had to manouver it onto the list with a floor jack, 'cause the rear locked up when I tried to go backwards... Turns out the post the spider gears turn on, and one of the small spider gears sheared in half... Though these could be replaced, it would appear that previous owners have not been real kind, as there is noticable evidence of rust on the spider gears (even pitting on the faces), as well as the shaft for the spider gears not fitting tightly in the carrier (wobble-wobble-wobble). . So we could weld a new pin in place, and de-burr the slighlty damaged gear faces, but it seems like that's asking for trouble, given the number of damaged faces... Look like I'll make a pilgramage up to rover's north, up near Burlington VT, (hell its more fun to bag a day of work than it is to mail order) and get a used diff from them... Done Not Done RH outrigger FL Wheel Bearing LH outrigger Brake Hoses Long Tie Rod Ends couple of broken brake bleeders to boot LR wheel bearing rear diff Water Pump more fuel line Fuel Line un-attached wheel stud So, the Rover is coming along rather well, though, at this point, I think I've spent more time under it than driving it... How's the boating life ? --bill
