With regard to free-wheeling hubs, I and many friends have used these for over 15 years. the rule we follow is to leave them in free all the time (except when 4WD is needed), BUT put them in fixed for just a mile or two every month or so. Another good idea is to use low ratio (bottom-box as we Brit LR freaks call it), just occasionally, say whenever you back out of your drive. You can do this perfectly safely with the hubs in free as long as you are GENTLE. This way all your little parts will stay properly lubricated! Simon.
