The easy way to tel what is leaking is to check all fluids frequently &
see which level drops.  In my case, the transfer case gave me no problem
for years. I almost never had to add fluid.  then, driving from Monterey
bay to Portland, my transfer case went dry about 60 mi south of Portland.

I overfilled it with 140w hi-temp oil & checked it at all rest stops on the 
way home.  The transfer case is definitly a major leaker new.  Rebuilding it
is on my list... along with replacing pinion seals of both diffs.
