Sondor is actually the name of the company that manufactures the foam compound.
The compound is called something else. I used XPS-5 I think.

Anyway, Sondor Industries is at 266 Haak Street, Waltloo, Pretoria.

Subject: Gearbox

I have finally got round to taking the gearbox out of my Landy and
whow....,I surely hope its the last time ever.
I remember someone on the list mentioning that he had to take it in
and out something like 4 or 5 times in one day. I think I need you!!

Seriously though. It didn't take us too long(Saturday morning) and
we had agrivating circumstances .(uneven gravel "floor" the worst of
them)

Now I will start to use all those saved info on spares etc. I can't find
one site however that someone posted a while ago for a guy in
Benoni that had very cheap parts (mainly interior and body). Can
someone please help me with that one.

Having read some of the list stories about unbalanced drivetrains
after work on the clutch etc. I am not to comfortable taking the
clutch of , but know I have to.
Does someone have a scetch of the alignment tool or some clever
plan maybe.
(Mike N. sent me all the papers needed for the gearbox overhaul -
thanks a lot Mike )
I struggled so much getting the box down that the installing part is
already giving me nightmares.I don't want to struggle with a
alignment problem trying to get the box in again.

Help , help , help

Thanks

Hennie

Speaking to my staff member at Sodwana, it seems that the KNNCS has already
or will be shortly stopping all driving from Cape Vidal to Sodwana Bay. The
reason I was given is that it has turned into a highway. There are also
reports of guys doing speeds of up to 100kmp/h on the beach. The number of
vehicles towing trailers through this section has also apparently become a
problem.

Hi Sarel,

I removed the floorboards, seatbox, tunnel and front doors. To put the box
back I used one of those hydraulic engine hoists on castors. I rented one form
a tool rental place here in Pretoria. With one of those devices it's a one man
job putting the box back. You can align the box up perfectly with such a
hoist.

Good luck, (especially on the prices of gears)

I just got the formal quote from the Lazer cutting guys and it ended up much
more than the figure he gave me verbally. The cost is R110.96 each excluding
VAT when made from 2mm stainless steel plate. Apparently ally will cost
more.

If any body is interested I can have them made up.

Wow! How close is the 'final' to the original? Can you mail me a file
that I can display?
Is there a possible discount for quantity? And how much is 'quantity'?

Subject: Tyre choice question

Yes I know you're all thinking "Oh God not another tyre thread" and Andy's
still going "Aaaarrrggghhhhhh" :-) but I was hoping the list could provide
me with a little advice.

My Rangie is currently fitted with a mixture of 205/16 tyres - 2 X Michelin
XPC, 1 X Michelin XMS (all three Michelin's quite new), 1 X Pirelli Scorpian
(quite worn now) and a real dog of a spare. I have been planning to buy two
new Michelin XPC and then move the XMS to the spare and keep the Pirelli as
another spare (I have six wheels). The two new Michelins will cost me R 2050
all incl.

I am a little concerned at the puncture resistance/off-road abilities
(mis-guided?) of the Michelins and have been looking at some other options.
I have been offered a set of 5 General Grabber AT's which have less than
2000 km on them (1 new) for R 2500. But I gather the Generals wear rather
quickly.

I use the Rangie both on-road (towing mostly) and off-road (4X4 tracks, Moz,
Sodwana and a two week trip planned to Bots/Caprivi in June/July) but
probably won't do more than 10 000 km per year. However I may still realise
my dream this year to do a 3 month trip up to Malawi/Tanzania.

So what would your choice be :-

1. 5 x General Grabber 205/16's with essentially 4 spares (3 good Michelin 1
OK Pirelli) Cost R 2500

2. 4 x Michelins 205/16's with 2 Spares (1 good Michelin and 1 OK Pirelli)
Cost R 2050

3. Fit a set of 6 X SAG's and flog the rest Cost (To my bank manager -
"Please sir can I have some more...?")

The minimum order amount is R300. So a minimum of three needs to be cut. The
cost seems to be driven by the huge amount of material piercings to be done
as well as the cutting path length.

I have Ruff Stuff covers,; was about R750 for front covers alone (another
6R750 for rear spilt seat covers). Thinner material than LR's, which my wife
got on her car. LR's is supposed to be waterproof and Ruff Stuff's is not.
Lr's feels "hotter" on my back/bottom when sitting than the RUff Stuff ones.
The Ruff Stuff lasted about 6 months before fraying at seams. They are
replacing them under "warranty". There is no question that the LR ones on my
wife's car is better quality. Takla also makes covers (available generally I
think but specifically through ARC) which to me looked similar in quality to
LR's.

The alignment tool looks kinda telescopic, with a larger diam for the clutch
plate and a smaller diam for the part which aligns with the flywheel. Can he
manufactured from a wooden dowl/pole of sufficient diameter, see the crude
drawing

Trolly jack from the bottom works alright, but it is better to hoist it from
the top, to allow free movement, and you can actually see what you are
doing.

Just a tip
Do a test/drive before everything is assembled and finished incase you have
to redo something.

Youll need and engine hoist or strong roof to attach a block and tackle to
to lift it just high enough to free the mountings. There may be one or two
linkages which youl have to loosen.
