Subject: RE : KALAHARI 4*4 ROUTE : BOTSWANA SIDE

Hi,

I'm planning the 4*4 route on the Botswana side of the Kalahari National
Park (or the Transfrontier Park). My questions are:

Anyone on the forum done this trip and what was your impression?

I know that trailers are not allowed, but a team member is thinking of
taking the chance as he has his rooftop on the trailer. Will the trailer
make it or is the route so sandy that he will really struggle? He is using a
T*y*t^ Front Runner (V6)

I am initially going to Nossop for 6 days and then the rest of the team will
join us to go on the 4*4 trip. Do I have to book out of Kalahari, travel to
the border post to enter Botswana (about 60km !) or could I just turn-off at
Twee Rivieren (RSA side) and cross to Two Rivers (Botswana side)

Any further need to know issues?

Your information will be appreciated.

Subject: Wuppertal 4x4 Route

Hi

Anyone on the list done the Wuppertal 4x4 Route (in the Western Cape) yet ?

We have done it this past weekend, and I would like to hear other people's
opinion on the downhill from the overnight campsite back to Wuppertal.

There is one particular section that contained the worst downhill I have
ever encountered. The track is strewn with loose boulders the size of ammo
boxes. The gradient was such that using 1st low was not enough to slow down
the vehicle enough. Much of this section (about 200m or more) was done
sliding down in what was often not a very controlled fashion. To add to the
excitement was some quite severe exposure on the right hand side of the
"track" ...

Am I being a whoos, or is this considered quite a *hectic* route ?

regards
johnny

Darryl

Have you checked the obvious bushes, i.e.

1.	Rear trailing arm bushes. I had this problem and when they were worn
the 'knocking' sound was pronounced.
2.	Exhaust pipe touching the chassis when accelerating.
3.	Loose shock mountings. Experienced this on my 'new' Landy and again,
the noise they made was quite loud.

Regards

Nic

Subject: Phosphoric Acid

Hi Guys,

All due precautions and safety measures having been taken into account I
am about to order a new lot of Phosphoric Acid (85%) from Protea
Chemicals.

It comes in 40kg drums, and works out to about R5/kg. I will need a drum
myself. Does anyone want to have a share in another drum? Maybe break it
up into 5 litre lots?

I am planning to go through to the factory tomorrow afternoon, so please
mail me offlist if you're interested.

Regards

I know you guys did the security thing a while ago but on UK TV we've just
had a programme filmed mainly in SA about car crime. They showed the
flame-thrower out the side which they said is legal.
I want one!!
They also said road deaths run at 25 a day, which is four times that of the
UK, and with a lot less people in a lot less space...
I guess you lot know all about defensive driving...
Best Cheers
Frank

The trailer probably stands a better chance than the Runt Runner :-{)}

No, really, I don't have the foggiest. Just couldn't resist...

With those kind of stats I would have thought you would have drawn the
conclusion that we were somewhat skilled at OFFENSIVE driving.
