What is the List?

The largest group of Land Rover Owners anywhere in daily communicaitons.

The Land Rover Owner or LRO mailing list is for those people who are naturally interested in these legendary British four wheel drive vehicles.

In the daily mail from the list, you'll hear tales of off-road mis-adventures, as well as occasional competition news and reviews, not to mention discussion on solving various sorts of mechanical problems.

Subscribers to the LRO lists

Presently there are hundreds of men and women, most of whom own one or more Land Rovers, as well as people who are considering acquiring one or are otherwise interested in the marque.

The Solihull designed vehicles owned by subscribers include various Series vehicles: from the earliest 80"Series I, through the ever-popular Series II or IIa, and Series III vehicles upto and including the current production Defender 90 & 110, Discovery, and Range Rover models. Many people own ex-military versions, including the light weight and the huge 101" Forward Control.

Of course we can't forget those, who in the quest for speed or other qualities have created their very own hybrid Rover. Some for the street, some for racing, fully prepared for Comp. Safari or Cross Country Vehicle trials.

Some LRO list history

The LRO list started out with an invitation to readers of the British Cars and Offroad mailing lists in May 1990. By year end there were some twenty subscribers, mostly stateside, with representatives of Canada, Finland, Norway and, of course, the United Kingdom.

In mid-1992 Dixon was working on unsticking pistons that hadn't moved in 17 years, and starting to form thoughts about how not to buy a used Land Rover. While not breaking sockets loaned from Canadian Tire, or watching gear oil freeze, he started on, and still edits the LRO FAQ . We started 1993 fifty strong and had picked up subscribers from around the globe. Terriann was told tales of how during the floods much of her 1/2 mile long driveway was under water, and her commute home included a drive through water deep enough for the pedals to get wet. Meanwhile Dixon's 109" was headed for a grand rebuild at the OVLR Technical Party in March.

In September of '94 there were a mere 150 subscribers, that number doubled by the end of the 1994, (to 360 in January 1995), and doubled again to 700+ in October '95, and doubled again by the end of 1996.

A seperate list was started for Range Rover Owners to discuss technical details and issues assocaited with current production vehicles. In addition to Range Rovers, all of the coil-sprung Land Rovers (90", 100", 127", Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover) are invited to bring technical issues to this list, as these models share similar running gear, suspension and engine choices.

After touring about the UK in a '72 Range Rover, I've returned to Boston, Massachusetts, US, and brought a '63 Series IIa with me. [Photo of me (left), the '72 RR (DAJ802L) and Pierre Kitteridge with his Series I, 'Allah' green laning on the Pennine Way in North Yorkshire, Nov. '95]

How to subscribe?

With hundreds of readers, subscribing and unsubscribing is now handled by an automated list server.

Note: The list server software presently in use only understands pure, unadulterated, old-fashioned plain TEXT messages.
It will not understand HTML, rich text format or other MIME-encoded messages. If you are using a browser or other mail-sending utility which typically sends messages either as MIME-encoded, as HTML or as both Text and HTML, please set this feature to 'plain text' before attempting to write to majordomo@Land-Rover.Team.Net and issue commands as specified below.
There are a few variations of the list available to suit your life style. The automated list server takes commands such as
  • subscribe listname
  • unsubscribe listname
  • index listname
  • get listname filename
  • help
follwoing are descriptions of the various lists, and sample subscribe commands.

Which distribution of the list ?

All three distributions of the Land Rover Owner mailing list will deliver all the messages to you, here is how they differ:

Land Rover Owner - the Real Time distribution
subscribe lro
This is also known as the real-time list, as every message sent is attempted to be delivered in a timely fashion. With the volume of mail, this is annoying to some, as it can cause many new-mail interruptions during the work day. All Land Rover Owners gather here to swap stories and off-road tall-tales.

The Land Rover Owner list tends to have a large number Series owners, mostly from North America (75%), who invariably migrate from tall-tales to to discussing mechanical matters regarding their legacy leaf-sprung Land Rovers.

So if you like:
grease under your finger nails
wimpy heaters
warm beer
pop-rivits (they're the only fastener you stock)
dents (you think they add character)
you can't recall when
no work needed to be done to your motor
you didn't have scraped knuckles
you need to know how to:
earn a Lug Nut Award
Then you can't go wrong with the Land Rover Owner list.

If the volume of traffic is a problem, the interruptions are bothersome, or you prefer less frequent mail then:

the Land Rover Owner Daily Digest
subscribe lro-digest
This is the digest version. Each day at about 8am EST, the messages sent in the last 24 hours are processed and made into one large mailing. Thus you'll receive one piece of mail per day from the Land Rover Owner mailing list if you choose this option. If your mail handlers or local software is unable to process very large pieces of mail (in excess of 30KB or 40KB), then you may want to:
Limited Size LRO Daily Digest
subscribe lro-digest-ltd
This is similar lro-digest except that the finished mail will be split into chunks of about 400 lines each, if the day's mail is in excess of that. A header is added to each of the pieces to let you know which order to read or re-assemble them in.

The Range Rover Owner & Coil Sprung Owner Mailing List/Digest

Given the mechanical advances over a few decades, and the standard of fittings expected in vehicles today, a number of advances have been made on the tried and true Land Rover. From the production of the first Range Rover in 1970, to the last of the Classic Range Rovers in February of 1996, the design of Range Rover came to influence tne next major family of 90", 110" & 127" Land Rovers (Defenders), as well the Discovery and the new Range Rover.

Those first coil-sprung, live-axle, full-time four wheel drive, Range Rovers set the standard for all to follow, both in the then radical body design, and in the absolute capability of the vehicle.

rro (Range Rover Owner)

If you want to inquire about

  • fuel injection
  • engine management computer error codes
  • the optional Discovery rear speaker fountain option
  • how to wire up a non-dealer CD changer
  • front/rear receiver mounted winch options
  • how to get a leak-free US spec. Defender canvas top,
Then you ought to join the rro (Range Rover Owner) list
subscribe rro
or digest version, cso-digest (Coil-Sprung Owner Digest).
subscribe cso-digest

If you find both the Land Rover Owner and Range Rover Owner lists irrestible, join both, but please try to avoid posting the same message to both lro and rro lists, as there is a significant number of people who subscribe to both.
